where would you go on your dream european honeymoon?

okay, so I put up a post earlier this week asking for some advice about trying to do barcelona, nice and venice in 2 weeks in europe.

If you had 7,000-8,000 to spend on a honeymoon in europe where would you go? My FH is hellbent on going to Barcelona, so can anyone tell me what they would do to see as much of europe on that dime? I've never been and want to see as much as possible.

Re: where would you go on your dream european honeymoon?

  •  I would personally stick to one country, maybe two.  That way you don't waste tons of time in travel and get a better feel of the country.
You can get great deals on AI in Spain and Portugal if you want to do that for a few days.

FILs have a villa on the Spanish island of Menorca and it's amazing!  You can get a ferry from Barcelona.

I'm not sure what time of year you are thinking of heading over, but I'm guessing airfare of KC is going to be more then I pay.  This could eat up $1500 or more.

I suggest renting apts to keep costs down as you can cook some meals at home.
  • Capri, Italy, hands down!

  • Hmmm.... I would probably pick Eastern Europe - Prague, Budapest, Vienna... something about them seems so fairytale-like! Would be fun just to stroll around.

H and I were in the same situation. We picked Italy and it was amazing! Flew into Rome, stayed in Florence while exploring other cities in Tuscany, made our way to Venice, then flew out of Milan. It was a dream honeymoon for us.

At first we thought about going to Italy, Greece and France, but we decided on just Italy because travelling between those 3 would be such a hassle and would take up a lot of time. We didn't want to be too exhausted on our honeymoon, we wanted days where we can just laze around in our room. You'll be doing so much walking, so it's best to have time to rest!
  • I've done it twice- Greek Isle Hopping! Def. Santorini Island (my favorite place on earth) and Mykonos. You could even add Crete.  Hellenic does some nice trips!

PS- I toured all of Spain, pick somewhere else! It was my least favorite European country. Runner-ups to Greece would be Austria (Salzburg) and Poland (Krakow)
  • We are going to Europe for 2 weeks for our honeymoon -- spending $7-8k like you mentioned. We will be in Barcelona for 3-4 days, Rome for 3-4 days and then Capri for a week! So excited!

To go to Barcelona, would you fly into Madrid?  Or Paris?  I'd go to that city, then go to Barcelona.  Two cities in two weeks, maybe a daytrip or two (Monserrat, maybe?), so you can get a great idea of the area and not spend all your time in and out of train stations and airports.

Personally, if I were going to Europe on honeymoon, it'd be somewhere along the Mediterranean, where meals are long and siestas are expected.  We contemplated Greece, but it was a little cold during the time we planned on traveling.  I love Italy and the south of France too, and I can't wait to go there with H in the future.  We chose Fiji, because currently we live on the west coast and H's friend owns a luxury adventure cruise ship.  How could we turn that down?
  • French Riviera and go see some Roman relics after that.

    The Greek Isles!
  • If you want to see a lot of Europe I would start in Spain and travel along the Med. coast from Spain all the way to Italy and then spend most of the time in Italy (although I"m biased because I LOVE Italy). The trains can be a great way to see a lot if you don't mind be constantly on the move.

  • I live in Europe and was just at a work conference with mostly all Europeans.  They were saying how annoying it is to them when THEY are in the US and someone says "Oh, I've been to Europe!" but really, you've been to 3 major cities, in major tourist spots.  You haven't seen Europe, you've seen a few cities IN Europe.  Would you say that someone who's been to Las Vegas has seen the US?  No, you'd say, "Well, what about x,y,z area??"

Just don't be those people.  It drives me bonkers when people try to fit in so many places in as short a time.  I'd personally, rather see ONE place really well than see 3 or 4 places just on the surface.  Quality of time over quantity of places!
  • I'm with Snippy, I'd rather see one place really well than to see a lot of places.  This has always been my aversion to cruises too.  When we were in Puerto Rico (a big cruise port), the only thing people got to see was the old city.  As much as I loved seeing that too, there was so much more to PR than that and you'd never get to experience that on a cruise.

There's a lot of places in Europe I'd like to see, but we're planning to make several trips over our lives together so we really get to see them.  We are planning a trip next summer to go to France (FI has family there that won't be able to make it to our wedding, so we are going to visit them a few months later).  We'd also like to do a trip eventually just for Italy, one just for Greece, etc etc.

  • I also agree with Snippy and others.  2 weeks is good in Spain.  There is a lot to see and do there.  IF I were to combine it with somewhere else, I'd probably go to Portugal.
  • I too agree with Snippy.

I spent 14 days in Barcelona with a day trip to Monserrat, we fit enough sites in that I don't feel like we skipped anything, yet it was leisurely enough that we were able to visit the same restaurant a couple of times and shops and what-not.

I hate that feeling you get when you're cramming too much in just to get to another place. Also I would want to do a little relaxing on my HM.

  • I would tour France. I'm actually dying to do that with FI Starting from Mont Saint Michel all the way down to Toulouse and Saint Tropez where we could visit his family.
  • I think two weeks in Barcelona is too long. Maybe a week at the very most... however I think I would be fine with 5 days. I also love Rome and the Amalfi Coast so I would go there too. I mean don't get me wrong, I love Barcelona and would stay longer if possible but the flight is so expensive I personally prefer to see more places. The problem with Europe is that there are so many beautiful places it is very diffficult to chose which cities you will spend your time in.

  • Have you looked into a cruise? My friends took a cruise and said they spent just enough time in each country.

My dream honeymoon in Europe would include Italy and France. The FI and I aren't able to squeeze in Italy for our honeymoon so we're doing France and taking the train to a couple other parts of Europe while we're there.
