unpopular opinions?

or just opinions?
I'm bored.

and I'll go first. it annoys me when christian people say one of the reasons they dislike islam is how women are treated. cause the christian bible isn't exaclty pro "girl power."

Re: unpopular opinions?

  • This is more of an "I judge" but I was a little disturbed by a friend who is 7 months pregnant telling me she drinks 3-4 cups of coffee a day.
  • I think that families who go green should be commended, but some go too far. I'm trying to eliminate as many paper and disposable products as possible, but I draw the line at toilet paper.  Yes, I use cloth diapers and cloth wipes but I have no desire to launder adult poop on washcloths.

If any of your opinions have to do with television coverage, apparently you can now take hostages to proclaim your dissatisfaction...

Next time you hear someone say that, let them know that things such as female subjugation, burqa's and niab's are actually a male thing that they invented to force women into being inferior.  No where in the Quran does it say that women are required to do anything other than dress modestly.  Also, it gives women full rights in marriage, inheritance, marriage and divorce.  Any deviation from the rules set out in the Quran are again, interpretations of men; not the actuality of the religious text.

AND, the final neener neener is that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is mentioned more often, and is more revered in the Quran than she is in the Bible.
  • I know that tourism brings lots of money to my city but I freaking HATE tourist drivers. Get out of my way while you meander along looking for a parking space or that street you probably missed a couple blocks back. The right lane is NOT a stopping lane for looking at your map and figuring out where you are. ARGH!

    exactly.
in theory, if christian husbands wanted their wives to wear burqas, and wives are supposed to "obey," wives would "have" to.

  • I DO think New Yorkers (and DCers) "own" 9/11 more than the rest of the country. There's a huge difference between knowing a dozen people who were trapped in the buildings and not knowing if they were alive or dead for days, living in what essentially looked like a war zone, and being scared for your life that another attack would come... and seeing it on TV and thinking it's all super sad. And maybe having your flights canceled.

Yeah, I knew someone who died on 9/11. But I was pretty cozy on my college campus, hundreds of miles away from lower Manhattan. My life was in no way in jeopardy. I give all the credit in the world to people who actually lives through that.

see, ok. I understand if you lived in NYC and lost someone that day, you feel a more emotional tie. but the attack was MEANT to be on America as a whole. and as a whole, we went to war. if DC and NYC "own" 9/11, then only "their" soldiers should've gone.
  • PS, Amoro is right. Muslim women had much more freedom in marriage, divorce, inheritance and property ownership than women in Victorian England or America. And there's nothing about female dress in the Quran. Actually, the Quran also says that women should be educated in order to benefit the family (their children's education). There's a good book called "Beyond the Veil" about that.

Moral of the story: the Taliban are a bunch of thugs who don't know a lot about "real" Islam.

Where's the news on that?  Only thing I can find is a supreme court ruling in 2004 that spanking was legal, upholding an appeals court decision saying the same thing.

Yeah, I get that. I just dislike when people politicize 9/11 when they live in, say, Seattle and have no relatives in the military whatsoever.

It's especially fun when it's something like the "mosque" issue where many New Yorkers and like, "Um, okay, that's fine." Or when most New Yorkers vote for a president who wants to stop the war.

Use it for their own political agenda. Currently, the issue of the "ground zero mosque" comes to mind. Most of the protesters aren't New Yorkers. They bus in from elsewhere.

Or pretty much anyone who uses 9/11 victims or families and claims that what they want is what "they" would have wanted. You didn't know them and I hardly doubt 3,000 people would be in consensus over any issue.

I think it was more of an issue in 2004. The Republican platform was more along the lines of keeping America safe from terrorists during that election, using proof like the fact they had passed the Patriot Act and whatnot. And then a vast majority of voters in NY and DC voted for Kerry. So they clearly didn't believe that Republicans were doing anything to prevent another attack, or there were other issues that were more important to them.

Just because I worked in the Pentagon and sat every day in an office that had been destroyed, I have never once felt like I had any more stake in "owning" the tragedy than anyone else, anywhere else.

We were at a bbq with some of our friends the other night, and we all brought a part of the meal. Dessert was pie. • If DC and NY "own" 9/11, then should we (the general public) also not bother caring about NOLA, Haiti, Iraq, etc since we "weren't there"? That logic makes no sense.
