WSG- 6/30/2011- WL- Knowing the Signals

Happy Thursday, Ladies!!

Well, as many of you know- I go to Weight Watcher (WW) meetings every Saturday and will share some of the things I learned here in our "Wellness Support Group" every Thursday.

I know that others don't have weight loss (WL) goals.

(Tee hee- I kid, I kid. Besides- someday we will ALL be skinny b!tches)

So I was thinking of maybe doing these "meetings" on Thursday and perhaps focusing on fitness/other wellness on another day or in another thread on the same day. What do you think?

To Begin- Does anyone have anything awesome they want to share this week? I know Liv walked 5 (!!) miles a couple evenings ago and rdr ran an entire mile (she's doing the Couch to 5K program)!
Who else deserves a bravo sticker?

Today, we're going to dig into the topic of, "Is it time to eat?!"
(Helllloo? When is it NOT time to eat, WW? Geeze)

There is a Spanish Proverb that says, "The Belly Rules the Mind."
What Rules your Belly and Mind?

1. WHY do YOU eat?

2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?

3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?
What happens when you ignore or misinterpret our body's true hunger signals?

4. What are some hunger signal strategies?

And for this week, WW leaves you with the following thought:

Next Week: Pack your Plan

Hm. I've walked everyday since Sunday. That's not too shabby, right? Bravo, star?

    1. WHY do YOU eat?
I eat when I'm bored. I eat when I'm feeling overwhelmed with stress or sadness. And sometimes....I eat when I'm hungry.

    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?

My stomach sometimes grumbles. I can get headachy. And I know this sounds totally weird- but sometimes I can feel it in my chest. I just generally feel pretty yucky when I'm hungry. And I can get really cranky when I'm not fed.

    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?
Sometimes when I get stuck on a "project" of some sort- I'll say...."Oooh...I'll eat when this is done." And by that time- I'm staring and willing to make uberly bad choices. Sometimes I can't tell if I'm just thirsty, versus hungry.

    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?
Drink lots of water. Carve out time to eat and stick to my schedule. Have proper snacks throughout the day.

    1. WHY do YOU eat?
    Cause I'm hungry.
    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?
    Cravings and hunger rumbles.
    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?
Answering them with the right food choices
    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?
Eating at certain times, before you get too hungry. And chosing things that give you the satisfying energy your hunger is actually asking for.

Side note: When I bit into my Nutrigrain bar on my ride into work it felt unusually firm. I looked down at the package and EW! there was a huge hole. I spit out what was in my mouth, and examined the bar for bite marks! If we have mice I will flip. No bite marks. Dunno why the packaging was ripped, but I will check out the box once I get home.

    1. WHY do YOU eat?

I have a love affair going on with food.  Especially cheese.  I eat when I'm emotional, I eat when I'm bored, and I eat when I'm hungry.  I eat when it's just there too.

    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?

    My tummy makes funny noises

    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?
What happens when you ignore or misinterpret our body's true hunger signals?

    I have acquired..."thunder thighs"

    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?

Small meals.  Healthy snacks.  Resist that icing and take charge of the carrots and celery!

Lunar, you definitely get a bravo sticker for walking every day, that's fantastic!! And thanks for my bravo sticker, I miss those from the meetings big time :)

    1. WHY do YOU eat?
Other than when I'm hungry, I eat when I'm bored.  I work on a trading desk, if they're not trading, I'm not doing work which leaves a lot of down time during the day & I'm here from 630am until 5pm.  To fill in this down time, my coworkers order food (burgers, cheesesteaks, massive amounts of food -- I will PIP next time we have a big spread for lunch), buy $20 in candy bars from the store downstairs, buy ice cream from the truck outside. And when it's there & it's free & there's nothing else to do it's really hard to say NO.

    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?
My tummy grumbles & while it's not my body, when I look at the clock & see that it's 730 am or noon or 6pm, I know that it's time to eat & then it's almost as though I subconsciously make myself hungry just by glancing at the clock.

    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?
I try to wait until certain times of the day to eat but sometimes I'll eat lunch too early & I've already eaten the fruit I brought as a snack so I think about heading to the vending machine in the afternoon.

    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?
WATER IS MY FRIEND!!! I have to remind myself this constantly.  I realized I was drinking little/no water during the day at work.  I was however, drinking 3 cups of coffee.  I dropped down to 1 coffee in the morning & then chugging water like it's nobody's business for the rest of the day.  When my stomach's growling & it's not quite lunch time, I fill up my cup & down it.  That is really helping A LOT.

I also just need to vent for a second.  I went from not budging from the couch at night/wknds and eating anything & everything to working out 3x a week & staying at or under 1200 calories a day  for 3 weeks now & my scale has not budged -- not even 1/10 of a lb.  I know, I know, don't focus on the number on the scale, you can see/feel a difference in other ways. But I don't really.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong & it's really starting to drive me insane. I think I'm going to join WW online again & do the points instead of the calories thing. Any other advice/suggestions??

    1. WHY do YOU eat?

I eat when I'm hungry, but also when I bored and emotional.

    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?

My stomach hurts, I'm irritable and sometimes I get nauseous.

    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals? What happens when you ignore or misinterpret our body's true
    hunger signals?

I'm pretty good about breakfast and lunch and when I adequately prepare snacks for work. Once I'm not as disciplined I'm good at ignoring the singals and making poor choices.

    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?

Planning ahead is a big one, so I don't make poor choices. Drinking water is also important. Plus, doing another activity rather than eating is good.

THS.  1200 calories is VERY low, especially if you're working out.  Eating too few calories is very bad for your body (<a href="http://www.everydayhealth.com/weight/fewer-calories-stalls-metabolism.aspx">CLICKY </a>for article).

I would say WW might be a good choice because they will calculate the proper number of points for your weight and weight loss goals and you won't be focusing on calories.

I know we all want to lose quickly, but remember, the slower you lose, the more likely you are to NOT gain that weight back.

Rdr - I used to work on a trading desk. I found the hours to be brutal, always a zombie on a Friday night. Do you like it? What kind of stuff do you trade? I used to do stuff like commercial paper, bankers acceptances and treasury bills.

<div>I've been using 'My Fitness Pal' online & I have the app on my phone.  I had to input all my info (weight, height, work activity level, work-out routine, etc) and it gave me the 1200 cal number.  I know you're right about the undereating I remember when I did go to WW meetings, a lot of women had that problem which always blows me away! The site you gave me says Fat Loss = 1582 cals/day & Extreme Fat Loss = 1200 cals/day.  </div>

    1. WHY do YOU eat?
I eat when I'm hungry.  One of the problems, though, is that I don't get hungry until around 11:30 at the earliest.  I try to force myself to eat breakfast, because if I don't, I can get shaky and a headache later in the day.

    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?
My stomach tells me.  Sometimes I get a headache or my hands shake (very badly).  I also get really cranky if I need to eat.

    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?

Sometimes my hunger comes on really quickly and the only thing I can focus on is getting food rightthissecond, which sometimes results in not so great food choices.

    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?
I need to eat at the first signs of hunger instead of waiting until I'm starving.  I also need to drink water at the first signs of hunger to make sure I'm not thirsty.

Honestly, I do not get hungry that often.  It's kind of odd.  I need to get my body back on a better schedule.

SKP - Yea I'm thinking I'll just join online again. I succeeded the most when I went in person but I don't have the time for it in the summer which is why I stopped going to the meetings last year & switched to online.  It's hard doing it alone!

Hazel - Hmm do I like it... I don't know that I'd say like but I can stand it.  It has a lot of perks  -- free breakfast & lunch, an awesome expense account, laid back atmosphere, I can go on TK all day :).  I've been here for 4 years & so I'm really used to the hours now. I go to bed at like 10 during the week though haha I'm the granny of my friends, none of them have to be at work before 930am. We trade interest rates. To be perfectly honest, and this is a little embarrassing, I don't fully understand what we trade/do. I know how to do my job though LOL!

Sorry I'm late! I actually had to work!

    1. WHY do YOU eat?
Much like the rest of you ladies, I eat when I'm bored, when I'm stressed, when I'm sad, and every once in a while I eat because I'm hungry.

    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?
Usually a growling stomach, sometimes gas (I tend to burp a lot when I'm hungry), headaches and I get super cranky!

    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?
What happens when you ignore or misinterpret our body's true hunger signals?
I don't have challenges identifying these signals, but some times I can't eat when they start. If I'm in the middle of a meeting or in an inconvenient place, I can't eat. When I ignore the signals, I tend to go BSC. I mean REALLY BSC.

    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?
I'm trying to keep healthy WW friendly snacks on me and eat regularly throughout the day.

Wow, that's the same issue I have! I succeed so much better when I'm going to meetings (the fear of checking in I guess). When I do it online I notice that I'm more likely to "cheat" which only sabotages me in the end. This time around I'm doing WW online w/ BF and my FSIL. It's kind of nice that we are all on the same page and can watch each other and encourage each other.

Plus, you're not completely alone now. You've got NEY WSG here with you! We're gonna do this together.

I eat for fun, as a social activity, when I'm stressed, when I'm happy, when I'm sad. Basically I eat at all times and for all emotions! Yikes!

    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?

The tummy grumble is a good indication. But when I'm trying to "train" my body better, it could be as simple as a time indicator. For example, right now I eat breakfast at around 7:45/8a.m. I try to have a snack, apples, some nuts, or a banana between 10:30 and 11. I eat lunch around 1:30. When I see those times...10:30, 1:30 etc, my hunger is triggered b/c I know I "get" to eat. Even if I wasn't hungry 10 minutes previously.

    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?

Staying disciplined. Eating healthy foods when I know I should And at normal times instead of deciding, "oh, I'm not hungry now." then getting to lunch and eating 156 nuggets and 10 orders of waffle fries from chick-fil-a. If I'd had my healthy snack, hungry or not, I would have had more will power to make a healthy choice at lunch instead of being ravished and pulling into the first fast food place I see.

What happens when you ignore or misinterpret our body's true hunger signals?

Chaos! There's really no getting around it. I eat everything and anything.

    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?

I don't know if I have any strategies. I obviously struggle with this. I do better when I'm super disciplined, which is harder on weekends when my schedule isn't set. But my body personally doesn't cope well with a lot of treats. It's easy to think, its okay to have full fat ranch or blue cheese on this salad, just once, which leads to, oh 1 piece of pie won't hurt, which leads to, oh I've been good, I can have french toast and hashbrowns this once, which leads to it's the weekend, I'll just have 1 or 2 slices of pizza and 1 light beer. 3 or 4 days later, I'm up 8 lbs when 2 out of my 3 regular meals might have been perfect, but I'm messing myself up thinking I can cheat a little. Give me an inch, I'll take a mile. For me it's better to treat myself to "gifts" every 10 or so lbs. And gifts of the shoe/purse/jewelry variety as opposed to treating myself with food. Afterall, that's what got me into these XL pants!

Sorry my formatting is all jacked. I typed on my phone. Also, I'd like to AW my 10K (6.2 miles) in Monday! The Peachtree Road race in the biggest 10k in the world since the 70's (except for 1 year in there). I've run is twice before and it's awesome!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: WSG- 6/30/2011- WL- Knowing the Signals : Mine's on the fridge, too. :) How many days/week is C25K? This recommends three days: M/W/F. I now talk in WW speak to BF: I'm like "Oh, that will totally earn me 5 activity points." Or "That food costs too many points."

    1. WHY do YOU eat?
When I'm bored, sometimes hungry, and when I have cravings for certain things

    2. How do you know that you are hungry? What signals does your body give you?
Stomach rumbling, I feel shiity, cranky

    3. What are some challenges you face regarding these hunger signals?
What happens when you ignore or misinterpret our body's true hunger signals?
I need to learn to eat when I'm actually hungry, not just cause something sounds good.
When I don't eat when I am hungry I end up eating more than normal and usually really bad food.

    4. What are some hunger signal strategies?
Don't eat unless I'm actually hungry I guess??
