When to ask potential bridesmaids

Hi,

everyone keeps saying don't ask too soon. So, when is the right time to ask someone to be a bridesmaid. I want to ask my two best friends from college and then my finace's brother's wife.

Anything earlier than a year out is definitely too far.  The only thing they really need to do is get the dress, so you can technically wait to ask until it's time to start considering that, around 6-9 months out.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

I asked my ladies 8 months before the wedding, which is a good amount of time. Give them enough time to save up for the dress and other expenses.

A good rule of thumb is less than one year out.

I told my BMs about a year before as I wanted them to know before the engagement party.  I think a year or less is pretty safe.

Yeah make sure Fi's brother and wife are doing ok before you ask her.  My Fi's brothers wife was going to stand up in ours but she asked for a divorce.  Luckily she stepped down voluntarily, otherwise it would have been a sucky situation.  Not that it already wasn't to begin with.  But yeah like the PP said, make sure you don't do it too far out.

I'd say no more than a year out. Like PPs said relationships can change.

Even though my wedding is so far out, my sisters already know they will be in our wedding. One of my sisters is planning her own wedding so we have been doing a lot of the planning together. we are also have a destination wedding so we are asking the rest of the wedding party about the same time as we send our Save the Dates out which will be about 10 months before the wedding.

My wedding is this June and I asked in September. Dresses needed to be ordered by Dec and it was time consuming to make sure the dress I picked looked good on all 9 gals Plus, they had to all get to the boutique and get measured.
