we are having our wedding in a large metro park. We have rented a pavilion and the scenery is beautiful. The only problem is we are on a very tight budget and we don't know what to serve! It's a very casual wedding and the theme is sort of picnic-like. We will be eating at around 2 pm so it's not going to be a full fledged dinner or anything. What should I serve? We were thinking a variety of fried and roasted chicken or maybe some subs. But is that too heavy for a mid-day outdoor summer reception? It has to be something we can pick up and bring with us because we can't technically cater into the park. And preferably something cheap when bought in bulk! Any ideas? It's greatly appreciated. Sorry in advance for any spelling or grammatical errors. I'm typing this on an iPod!

I think you might get some ideas if you posted this on the Detroit board (see to the left, "local wedding boards", click on it and the Michigan-Detroit board comes up). There are many brides who have had weddings in parks, and other ideas regarding caterers and costs.

Have a picnic reception!  Another Knottie went to Costco and bought fixings for hotdogs and burgers, chips, potato salad and beans, and fed her guests a ton of food for less than four bucks per person.

I love the croissant sandwhiches from Costco!  Also chilled beverages, and maybe fruit and veggie trays.

The only thing I would say is make sure the food you serve isn't anything that will spoil easily with outdoor temperatures. If you have hot foods you can't keep them hot with no power. I like the idea of sandwiches . Simple would be cheaper and you won't have to worry about anything going bad quickly.

Did she mention how she managed to cook enough food for everyone? The park we are at has grills on a first come first serve basis and they are very small! And I'm not sure who I could ask to take on that responsibility. That's a lot of work! It's a really good idea though if I could figure out how to swing it.

Good point- I got food poisoning from a hot dog that wasn't kept at the correct temperature at a picnic. I thought I was going to die.

Maybe Subway? They make platters or like 6 foot long subs for parties/events. I dont think they are super expensive either, and you can get all of the toppings as sides.
