Welcome to the wedding party board and congratulations on your engagement.  It's an exciting process to plan a wedding!  Please take a minute to just read from the list below.  This may help answer some of the frequently asked questions.

*** If you're new, lurk for a little bit.  The international boards (anything that isn't your local) offer a wealth of information and the ladies are great.  The advice often can be more blunt and up front than you'll find on your local boards though but don't worry...we don't bite!***

Also, if you're a vendor looking to advertise your company, contact The Knot for advertising space.  Vendors are not allowed to post on boards.  If you do create a post that is advertising, I'm going to have to delete any thread or post that is a blatant advertisement for your services and you will be banned as a vendor as well.

And PLEASE don't use colored or funky fonts when you write out your questions.  This can be quite difficult to read.

Some FAQs:!

1) When should I ask my bridal party?
The general rule is that you shouldn't ask until the date is firmly set and you're 6-9 months from the big day.  It's possible to ask with more time prior to the wedding but we often advise against that on the boards.  The reason is that relationships can change just as people do - and once you DO ask, you can't take it back.  That leads us to #2!

2) How can I tell a BM/MOH or other WP member that she needs to 'step down'?
The answer is - You can't.
There's no way to do this without it being a friendship-ending slight.  Saying, "I don't want you to be in the wedding with me anymore," sends an ugly message about how you value the friend.  Sometimes there are huge friendship issues that happen, but if you just feel like you wish you picked someone else, you can't go back.  That's why it's so important to wait until you know that you're making the best choice possible....just like finding the right guy!

3) What are the wedding party duties?
Their official duties are to buy the dress and show up on the big day.  That's it.  Really.  (no - you can't require that they pay for their hair and makeup - but they may want to pay for it as a fun pre-wedding thing.  Be flexible.)

Now we all know that there are traditional elements to the roles of being a BM or MOH.  However those are tasks that the BMs or MsOH take on their own.  Please don't ask people to be in the wedding based on their ability to plan a party or give a speech.  All of those things are traditional but they're a gift to you - just like that diamond you might be wearing on your left hand.     If you're a BM or MOH, please think about a shower and bachelorette for your friend the bride if that's at all possible.  They can be a ton of fun for you and her!

4) When it comes to shopping, ask your friends what they want to spend before they go dress shopping.
And keep your options open!  You never know when some great style will pop in front of you that you never thought would look great on them.

5) BM gift ideas?
The best BM gifts are ones that are all about what makes that BM or MOH such a unique individual.  Think outside the box.  The possibilities are endless!  Think different things for each BM if their tastes are different.  The important thing is that the gift is genuine and fits the recipient.

5A - The gift should NEVER be something that you require for wear during your wedding.  Giving jewelry is great but if you require that your BMs and MOH wear it, it stops being their present and starts being part of their attire that you bought for them.  Stick with the above and your BMs will love you and the thought you put into their presents.

There are plenty of other things that are discussed on the WP board but these are the top 5.  Enjoy your wedding planning and enjoy the WP board!
