40 Cringeworthy 1970s Men's Fashion Ads

http://pulptastic.com/40-cringeworthy-mens-fashion-ads-70s/

I chuckled over the first comment, "This is what happens when everyone is on cocaine". With all the knit vests, I wonder when a very crafty Offbeat Bride will take it upon herself to make some for all the groomsmen! ;)

I can't figure out which killed me more. There's a tight contest going between the chicken vs. the "underwear that's funtawear".

My dad has some of the wide-collared shirts and some of the leisure suits.    None of those knit sweaters or printed pants.  Although some of my cousins did.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    hahaha these are pretty fantastic!!

My dad's high school/ college pics during that time were mainly just bellbottom jeans, tight printed t shirts, and long hair (basically the cast of The Wonder Years).

@cmgragain You husband get down and groovy with some of these??

Not gonna lie, I might possibly wear some of those boys crewneck sweaters from Penneys (#5). The bird ones are particularly epic.

I was born in 82 but I've seen pictures of my dad in a brown leisure suit very similar to the green ones pictured in #35.

My parents got married in 1970.  When the guys went to get the tuxes, they picked out the Edwardian ones.  Those are the ones with the ruffles.  An hour or so after the shopping trip, my dad gets a call from my mom saying the wedding is off!  Apparently my granddad did not want to be caught dead in one of them, so he told my mom they couldn't get married!  When they were tux shopping, all the GM wanted the Edwardian tuxes, but my granddad didn't speak up - he just decided to go home and tell my mom she couldn't get married.  So the tux order was changed to a more standard black tux with bow tie and the wedding proceeded as planned.  I'm sure looking back, my parents are much happier with that decision!

Some of those looks are epic!  I love all the men onesies!

My dad had the Edwardian tuxes for their wedding in 1975!  The guys had black pants with cream jackets, and all the ruffles.  Grandpa just wore a navy suit though.

#14 has a website address on the page. I'm so confused!

Hahaha - my very stylish BIL had a jumpsuit like the one in the last pic. He and my husband were two wild and crazy guys in their printed shirts and bell bottoms.

I saved a few of DHs plaid suits for posterity. A great grandson, one day, might appreciate a vintage suit for his wedding.

Ok, that one can't be from the 70's then... I found the website that the ad next to the man in the nightgown shows, and it is a current website. Even the logo is the same as in the ad. Which leads me to believe that #14 is a current thing.

My stepbrothers both wore vintage 70's era suits to my sister's wedding (which was circa the year 2000). They searched every thrift store in the region beforehand - it was quite a production. One was powder blue. The other was white with ruffles. Both had fantastic bell-bottoms. I wish I still had a copy of that photo!

My parents got married in 1972. My dad wore a brown corduroy suit, with wide lapels. It was all the rage. It went with my mother's pink gingham dress. The bridesmaids wore blue gingham. It was very, very 70s.

Am I the only one who is relieved that the man bulge is no longer emphasized in fashion?
Yes! I felt vaguely dirty when looking through those, sort of like I had been leafing through soft-core porn.

I can remember those.  I once had a date show up, dressed so colorfully that I had to change my dress because we clashed.  DH wore polyester body suits when we first were married.  It took me about two years to get him into more classic menswear.
This ad is why I urge brides to not insist on anything except BLACK tuxedos.

Nope, nope, nope! The world would be a boring place if everyone dressed to standard uniforms.  If my husband wore a black tux to our wedding, he would have stood out from the guests in their plaid bell bottoms and leisure suits. My children have experienced immeasurable hilarity from looking at my wedding album.
This. I don't care if my wedding was trendy. It's not like in 40 years I'm going to try to pretend I didn't get married in 2014 - thank GOD H wore that black suit so we could pull it off!

A few days ago my cousin posted a few wedding pictures from her wedding in like 1999. Even those were fun to look at. I think seeing the trend and style changes is one of the best parts of looking at old pictures.

I was hoping @MairePoppy would see this, hehe.

My soon to be stepdad said he's going to break out his powder blue suit for my wedding. And when my dad was looking for suits, he telling me he'd buy whatever I wanted him to wear so I told him and the salesman he should wear a My Cousin Vinny-esque maroon suit ;)

    image

FFIL is also saying he may his powder blue suit since it fits. IDGAF; frankly I think it'll be a great story.

Just popped in to say my mom loves to tell me the 70s was the era where "everyone tried to make everything as ugly as humanly possible."

My parents got married in the 70s and my dad had the most hilarious white suit I have ever seen. Massive lapels, kinda fro-y hair, and mid-height platform shoes. If I remember correctly, they all had the ruffles, too. My mom's dress has full-length sleeves with slightly puffy shoulders. I actually put it on the other day and OMG it was so comfortable. I forget what she said the material was, but it felt like a nightgown.

I had a date, once, who fell off his platform shoes coming down some steps and sprained his ankle.  He was on the football team, and , oh my, did he take kidding from the team!

Yes, those 70s dresses were very comfortable, with high empire waists, lace and long sleeves.  Then Princess Diana got married in that cream puff gown and everything went crazy.with bling and huge, puffy sleeves.
