F/U: Dress shopping attempt number two (with pics)

It didn't go well. And I couldn't take pictures. First of all when I walked into the place they didn't even acknowledge my existence. Then when I said I had an appointment they looked at me like I was crazy. So then this chick tells me to start looking at dresses and to let her know which ones I want in the dressing room. The racks were really tightly packed so it was hard to find anything. Then when I did find something, the girl was helping someone with a fitting. Then I finally got to trying stuff on and it was just a small dressing room and I had to do everything myself. Taking these huge dresses off the hangers, getting in them, zipping them up, she was no where to be found. Plus I am smaller than sample size so they all just looked huge on me because they weren't "clipping" it. Needless to say I was less than impressed with the customer service.

Also, I don't understand why it is so hard to find a simple wedding dressing without a bunch of ruching/beading/crap etc...I can find them online but stores just don't have them.

This is my ideal dress. I tried it on at the first place and loved it, but it is way too expensive:

This dress is in my budget, but no place that carries the line has had it in stock. The first place I went is having a trunk show with the designer in October where they could ask them to bring it, but it's kind of far away to go again and I have a super hectic schedule:

This one I tried on at the store and kind of liked. It was way affordable, which is a plus. I tried it without the hideous sash

This is another one I tried. It is a pretty dress and I liked the way it looked on me, but it really just isn't the style I saw myself getting married in. FI and I both have a more modern style and this was too traditional. Plus it was over budget.

So I am really frustrated. I don't like this experience so far because I feel like a picky brat. I'm trying not to act like it, but I just don't get why everything in the stores has to be so overdone. I think I need to take a wedding dress shopping hiatus. Does anyone have any suggestions for a simple/elegant wedding dress that they've come across in shopping?

All of those dresses have very similar silhouettes. Not that that's a bad thing, but have you tried anything else? It really helped me feel a lot more sure of what I wanted when I tried on a few that were very different from my vision. Also, by doing that, I got to discover features I liked even on dresses I didn't, so when I finally found the dress that combined all those things, I knew it was the one.

I really like the third one from the ones you posted.

Boo. I'm sorry it didn't go well.

I'm really particular about customer service- so I probably would have walked out.
I'm surprised you aren't liking the experience because of the service...not because "you are a picky brat." I don't think you are being a brat...I don't think that they are listening to you.

Maybe my expectations for a wedding dress consultant is too high or something. ::shrugs::

I feel like they should be like wedding dress realtors...listen to me...watch my body language while I'm trying on dresses...and help me find something that I will love. That's what our realtor did when we bought our house.

I'm sorry you've had a couple of not so great experiences, but you have over a year until your wedding. I would say definitely stop if you're already frustrated after your 2nd time.

Have you booked your venue yet (sorry if I missed the AW on that)? If you haven't booked your venue, you may want to do that before dress shopping. I know I would choose a different dress if we were getting married somewhere more formal vs. having an outdoor ceremony.

I have tried other shapes. I tried more of a sheath dress and it just didn't feel bridal enough. Ballgown/A-line generally have too much fabric for my taste. Certain dresses with natural waists I like, but not all. It's really been more of a problem of finding a dress that doesn't have a lot going on. I have tried beading and lace and I consistently don't like it. It's just not my style. I feel like I'm being super picky, but aren't I allowed to be? I just find it frustrating that the stores don't have the simple designs in the store.

Aww I'm sorry you're having a tough time. It can be really frustrating when your appointment goes awry. Take it from me, this lack of customer service is probably an indication of how they will treat you after you buy. Don't go back to that place.

What ever you do, don't take people with you who are historically tough to shop with - even in a wedding gown - they don't change.

You are not being too picky! For something that you are spending nearly a mortgage payment on, you should get exactly what you want! You should feel like the dress was made for you - that is resembles your personality. You should love how you feel in your dress. Keep looking ok? And post pics. :)

    Suggestions!

What about this style? It's classic and simple without frills, decor, or ugly belts :)

What about this one? Is the lace too much for you?

I'm sorry you had such a terrible experience. I'm the same way as lunar, I definitely would have walked out. Maybe it is just me, but the experience is general is not what I worked it up in my mind to be. (I probably watch too much SYTTD)

I really like your choices, but I agree with Elle that you should at least try on different silhouettes. I ended up liking something completely different than I expected.

You're definitely allowed to be picky, especially while you've still got so much time. Just try to enjoy the process rather than be frustrated by it. Ask on your local board for recommendations of which shop to visit, too. Good customer service will make a huge difference.

I'm not into beading or lace either, so I feel your pain. I still found plenty out there to try on, though.

I would suggest going to a store you haven't been to before, and not go in looking for a particular dress or designer. Just say, "I like a mermaid/trumpet type of silhouette, and I prefer no lace or beading. What do you have in my price range?"

And then also be willing to try on other styles again.

You're allowed to be picky, and I'm glad that you go with an open mind. I will admit that is some HORRIBLE customer service. In the places I went they wouldn't let me handle the dresses on my own. Don't get me started at this one place where I went in and walked out 15 minutes later because the shop was so bad. They made me wear a hair net over my FACE. I felt like a horror movie victim about to get suffocated. I feel you pain I wanted a simple dress without a lot of bling. I tell you it is out there. But asking your local board and looking at reviews on Yelp is very helpful. Also you can always call head and ask them if there have a particular style in stock for you to try on, that way you don't have to waste time going there. A good shop will have a good selection and a sales person that can help you and devote her attention to you. Sometimes she might have to help another person, two brides at once at busy times.

Don't get burnt out. Take a break if you have to. That's what I did, else I would have gone crazy.

I shopped online, then I found bridal stores that carried that designer, and called to make sure they had the styles I liked. Once I got to the store, I would try on other styles as well, but it was nice to be able to see the styles I liked. So I recommend calling and asking about specific styles before you make an appointment.

Still, don;t limit yourself to things you like online. I hated the way my dress looked on the designer website, but I decided to try it on anyway because it was in my budget. Turned out that I loved it IRL.

Are you willing to share your budget? That would be more helpful for making suggestions.

Girl you can for sure find a beautiful gown and a veil and shoes and alterations for that amount. I did. :)

What about a consignment shop?! GASP! THE NERVE! :) My dress is brand new, tags are still attached, has never been altered. It's from Spain. The designer's gowns can only be found at a select few shops in the US. AND... it retails for $1700 and I paid $1000. What are the odds that I was going to find it in a consignment shop in Phx, AZ?! Go figure.

Just a thought.... I never thought I would find my dream wedding gown in a consignment shop. If all else is failing you... consider this option.

Serious! The lady handed me a hair net and told me to put it over my FACE. First it is a small dressing room, second it is unbelievably hot and so I was beyond annoyed after trying on three dresses I left. Went to my next bridal salon appt and had a complete opposite effect. Second salon they gave me a glass of bubbly and suggested dresses as well as grab the ones that I wanted to try on. Not only did one sales lady help me there were 1-2 more that drop by to talk to me.

I understand not getting make up in the dresses, but seriously that was so strange with the hair net.

SWhite, I was looking on Yelp, I'm not sure where you live in Detroit but the Wedding Shoppe is located in the area has really great reviews, they don't name their designers but from what I can see of the dresses on their site are pretty.

Lyn-I'll check out the Bridal Shoppe. I'm in Ann Arbor so it's a little far away, but doable

Nursey-There is a store in my area (like an hour away) that sells only sample gowns, so I may have to check that out, although the dresses that they have on their Facebook site (a gallery of all their dresses) don't jump out at me.

You should check out Priscilla of Boston. They have a bunch of dresses that seem like your style (fit and flare, not too much going on). I think they're gorgeous. They are closing so I *think* their dresses are on sale (under $2000) AND it looks like they're selling the samples for even cheaper if that's something you'd be willing to do. PofB dresses are gorgeous, IMO, and you might be able to get a really good deal. They're open until the end of this year.

I don't know if you're actually in Detroit or not, but there is a store in Ann Arbor that sells these dresses. It might be worth checking out the PofB site and if you like anything call that salon.

ETA: Actually since, they're closing it's probably only samples that are available. Duh. Well, I still think it might be worth a look especially if a salon near you has some samples in store.

Do you want a train on your dress?

This one from Davids Bridal is the plainest wedding dress I have seen. No ruching at all, but it has no train.

    Please to come to DC?

$2000 is a GREAT budget. Really. *puts on thinking cap*

Check out Paloma Blanca 4215. It has some rouching on the bodice, but it's pretty plain otherwise. And that belt is STUNNING IRL.

    HANG ON.

Check out Mikaella 1552. I know the front looks like your average dress. But the back is SO MUCH FUN.

Or Mikaella 1508. Similar concept, a little more fun than 1552. :)

Those three are in the $1600-$1800 range. Don't be afraid to ask for 10% off once you find a dress you love. Or hell, ask for 15 or 20% and then lower. The worst that they can do is tell you no.

I'm not familiar with a lot of the other designers, and the lower end ones I am familiar with are REALLY embellished. The great thing about a plain dress though (even one with a little rouching or pickups) is that you can always, ALWAYS add a belt. Or a ribbon with a brooch. Something extra that really makes the dress yours. And maybe it's a completely commonplace looking dress that you add really unique accessories to. I've seen girls do that and the accessories, the flowers, the hair, the veil...they all change the look of a dress so completely.

My recommendation is to find a salon with good reviews (like, amazing customer service), set up an appointment, tell your consultant what you want and what you've experienced (chances are, she knows the salons and their reputations), and see what she can do for you. A good consultant will understand how accessories change things. And she can turn a plain, just okay dress into the most drop dead ensemble you've ever seen.

    Chin up. <3

[QUOTE]Do you want a train on your dress? This one from Davids Bridal is the plainest wedding dress I have seen. No ruching at all, but it has no train. http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Simply-Elegant-Strapless-Gown-with-Ribbon-BR1014_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns I know a lot of girls hate on DB, I got my dress from DB though and I love it!

I too got my dress at DB and loved it the moment I tried it on. It's definitely good that you have time and are keeping a positive outlook on things. It makes me sad that you are having such a frustrating time with this so far but definitely try to not let it dissuade you. Back when I lived outside Detroit , I rather enjoyed the Davids Bridal in Plymouth while helping my friends find their dress. Hang in there , I'm sure you will find something you love soon enough :)

If you are anywhere near Troy you should check out the JCrew bridal store! They have some beautiful dresses that are really light on the beading/bling/ruching. Most of them are under $2000 and there are a lot under $1000 too. I loved my dress, but I wish they had JCrew bridal stores when I was shopping.
