Why am I thinking about the Peanuts cartoon where Lucy puts the sign up "therapist is in"?

[QUOTE]If we do not defend the English language against the illiterate teen texters, who will?  PLEASE MADAM, WHO WILL?? Typos here and there are understandable, but willfully ignorant people defending their use of poor grammar is shameful. Personally, I like for other intelligent adults to think that I am also intelligent!  I'm superficial like that.

It was my understanding that the field of social work, as many other fields, requires continuing education on a yearly basis. If one were to theoretically partake in this continuing education, it would be the hope of those receiving the aid of said social worker, that their social worker would be able to speak correctly and appropriately. Due to the nature of the business, coherent written communication is also a requirement. I, if faced with a decision, would rather have the assistance of a competent social worker; the social worker who figured out that the proper way to express her feelings would be to say that she "couldn't care less" instead of "could careless".

Btw, "pussification" is my new favorite word. Thanks for that one.

This is what I just read as a response to someone's proposal story, and I wanted to poke myself in the eye. Does anyone understand this garble? This is my complaint in the grammar department. I don't care about a misspelled word here and there. This is just blatant disregard for language, and spelling. This is what our society is turning into, and it's sickening. That's why people get upset. Please read below and tell me were teaching people in our schools.

Wow. I have never posted on this message board before and now understand why I have avoided it so completely. It's like high school all over again!
My fiance often calls me the "grammar police" because I correct people on a daily basis. I have a BA in English and am pursuing a MA. I understand being frustrated with people's blatant disregard for the English language but we do have to draw a line. Maybe English isn't the first language for a lot of Knotties. Perhaps some don't give a damn. Either way, complaining about grammar usage and spelling errors has nothing to do with attacking a person who may not agree with you. Just because we care doesn't  mean others have to. We are all entitled to our own opinions. Let's not make this about profession and let's not reduce ourselves to petty high school girls eager for some drama. You hate when someone uses their instead of they're or there. Vent about that, don't make it personal.

[QUOTE]Well I'm glad you don't care if someone can spell or not.  If you have poor spelling and grammar skills, you're going to sound like an idiot to anybody with half a brain.  As long as you're comfortable with that, kudos to you.

I honestly think I found a new favorite thread on here.

But I do get what she is trying to say. Grammar shouldn't be that big of a deal when it comes to a website. Then again, I am one to correct.

Here is my opinion on this subject, most of us grew up speaking and writing the language. We speak English, how hard is it to learn to spell right and use proper grammar? If you don't know how to spell something, pick up a dictionary or just use a different word. It makes me wonder what others were doing in the same English class that I was in. I learned it, where were you?

I actually had to endure a friend's FB post that said, "I wander if he's sits around and thanks about what I'm thanking about?"

I almost keeled over. It is one thing to make the occasional typo, but come on! That is too much!

I don't understand why people get so offended when their spelling and/or grammar is corrected. It's understandable that people make mistakes and that some people aren't as strong in certain areas as others. However, when someone corrects you why don't you look at it as a learning experience?

It's beneficial for everyone to have the proper skills to communicate effectively. Little corrections here and there, in my opinion, have the potential to do a great service if others are willing to accept them.

i will admit sometimes when i type i miss spell things or have run on sentences its only because im going to fast on the keyboard.. giving my opinion.....so i could really care less what people think if i accidentally misspell a phrase or two

I just wanted to give my support to all those defending the english language. I agree that typos are understandable, complete ignorance of the language you claim to speak is not. BTW, did anyone notice that the OP shut up as soon as her student status was mentioned?

Personally, I think you are all ridiculous.  Of course you are taken more seriously and judged less if you use proper spelling or grammar, but is that what we are on here to do?  Since when did the purpose of the Knot become to slam each other for being (or merely seeming) more or less educated than ourselves?  I find these errors to be mildly irritating, but not such an offense as to comment on them.  I do however, feel a need to comment on people bashing other people over such silly things.  If you don't think the person posting is intelligent enough to meet your standards, read the next post and move on.  We are all here to get wedding advice and support, not an education or ridicule.

At the risk of beating a dead thread...

I am not sure why this was not mentioned before (maybe it is a newer feature), but how about just using the spell check? It is located at the bottom of the post with "ABC" over a blue check mark.
