Long engmt-what to do with myself?!

Soooo... my fiance and I set our date this past weekend (Decenber 4th 2015!) so we have a rather long engagement. Of course this is nice since I will have plenty of time to save/plan all the other details but I feel like I have too much time-I don't know what to do with myself!! LOL!! Mom is taking care of photographer, well be attending some expos to pick a DJ (which his parents are covering), and of course i'll be pinteresting to get some ideas on other stuff but I have SO much time that i don't want to go crazy and do it all now... is this just me? I know I am releativley crazy but i don't know what i should be doing during this time frame! LOL

FI and I are having a 2.5 year engagement. Let me tell you, the time has flown by. The first year was kind of slow, but the last 18 months are moving right along. We are now less than 5 months out, and we are still finalizing stuff (I swear, I'm going to write our ceremony this week to give our officiant, I swear!). The best thing you can do is to relax and enjoy this special time in your life. Take this time to get away for a weekend (or longer) and just be. We took a couple of trips and did all the schmoopy things we would never do in front of our friends and family. Being engaged is also a great excuse to go out and visit friends and family, especially people you want to reconnect with before the wedding. At the very least, take a few months and practice calling him your fiance!

I don't like the word either!  It seems kind of pretentious to me, or something.

We have been engaged since June of 2012 and I thought it was great because I could spread out everything we needed to do over a long period of time- and it did give us a nice lead time to get all of the dates, venues, and vendors that we wanted.

But I haven't completed any of the DIY stuff I had planned on doing yet, so I'm not ahead there at all ><

    I completely agree!
  • I knew we were going to be on a tight budget (20k for an evening reception for 100+ around here is... ummm.. hard.), so I spent a lot of that first year testing out DIY projects. I dyed my coffee filters for my flowers and made a few to see how long they'd take me, tried different centerpiece/bouquet arrangements, and started figuring out which cross-stitch projects I wanted to do (turns out, I really only found a design I liked for our ring pillow). Oh, and we taste-tested A LOT of booze so we'd know what we wanted to serve at the wedding!

LOL where are you from? Long Island, NY with a 25k budget and i'm sweating bullets  hahaha. Lost you at the part regarding the dyed coffee filters though? What exactly are you making with that?
  • Northern NJ, in one of those stupid little rich towns in the mountains. Where celebrities and athletes live when they're not on the road (I drive by Rex Ryan's house on my way to work). Our 20k includes the entire ceremony/reception, gifts, rehearsal dinner, wedding rings, and tips. We are like $200 under budget right now, but I might be able to increase that number depending on what happens when I go look for my cultural dress. And the coffee filters are for fake flowers I'm making. I felt it was a waste to pay huge money for flowers that will wilt fairly quickly at an outdoor wedding in July. I did a variation on a Martha Stewart project and made centerpieces, bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres for like 25 bucks and will donate them to a local soup kitchen after the wedding. Saved myself over a grand, but it has taken about a year to get the "flowers" made.

LOL thats pretty cool about Rex-but yeah not fun living in these high cost areas! I think that is REALLy cool donating the flowers! Kudos to you! I can't believe it has taken you so long though? What has taken the longest with that project?
  • Just getting motivated. We figured out how many flowers we would need (216 for centerpieces, 12 for the guest book table, 24 for bouqets, etc.... so we're over 300). Plus, they involve a lot of twisting, wiring, and floral taping which is hell on my fingertips. I really only do a few at a time so I don't make my fingers too sore. I have a full time job, run my own small company, will become part-owner of another small company upon marriage, and do a shitload of volunteer work. Time is precious, but I also don't want to spend every waking moment focused solely on a day that no one will care about as much as FI and I do.

  • HAHAHAHA My FI and I got engaged at the beginning of 2013 and we aren't getting married until the end of 2017. So we'll be engaged for almost 6 years before we actually get married. I'm doing absolutely no planning for another two years. I'm only on here because I'm MOH for my best friend.

That's so funny- a girl on FB and I were just hving this conversation because both of us still say boyfriend because we think "fiance" sounds pretentious and snooty. I'm glad someone else feels this way.

I asked FI the other day- I said I keep calling you boyfriend, what do you call me when you're talking to guys at work? And he said wife, you're close enough to being my wife so I just say that. aaaaaaaw I was kind of touched but I refuse to say husband until we get married because that takes the fun out of it once I am married!
