i'm a newbie...

Hello Ladies,

I just wanted to introduce myself. =) I'm helping my sister plan her wedding and she has been a bit frazzeled lately. I may be calling on all of you for your expertise and moral support.....I'll most definitely need it!

Any advice for being new? I'm poking around on the boards and I see people are being reported left and right - you guys dont mess around!!

Hope you're all having a good night =)

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: i'm a newbie... : I could not agree more with everything said. There are alot of rude and snooty people on this website so do not let them get to you!!

Well, it's not that people are necessarily rude or snooty. It's just that a large majority of people on TK have different "norms" and ideas of what's right or not than I do. That's why I usually just keep my mouth shut. Not worth starting drama over me telling someone a partial cash bar is ok even if I think it is. *shrug*

  • If your sister decides to enroll in any contests to pay for all or part of her wedding, don't come here to get votes. It bugs people and will just make them want to vote for the competition. (I would recommend keeping it on Facebook, but I had a FB friend who did that recently and it was so annoying I had to block her posts.)

Welcome to the Knot :) When is your sister getting married?

  • thanks everyone! i saw the post where_the_girl_typed_like_this and i laughed my ass off!!!! you guys are a sassy bunch, loved it! i'm laughing again just thinking about it!

she has been engaged since June and was going to have her wedding June 2013 in Connecticut (where our family is) or Newport, RI (where her FI's family is), but may do a destination wedding instead. she is having a really hard time researching. i think she just isn't seeing it all painted out in lavender, which she is used to, and is obsessing with bad reviews and horror stories. i think she is feeling torn between picking her "turf" or his, so she is looking for neutral grounds. i dont know that Italy or Aruba needs to be neutral grounds, but it's her wedding and i support however she wants it to go down!

i have to admit i'm doing some side research for myself. i'm not engaged yet, but thats ok. it's sort of like going christmas shopping for othes and buying just yourself things!! ;)

  • Leenie,

If your sister has a few ideas, perhaps try having her create an 'inspiration board'. For me it was a lot easier to get a 'picture' when I put all the 'little pictures' together. It was also easier to see what went versus what didn't. I hope that makes some sense.

Woo for CT btw! DH is from there and we're hoping to be moving in that general direction soonish (hopefully before the next year, pending jobs).

NCSU, that is SUCH a great idea & makes perfect sense! she is artsy, so i think she  can take that nervous energy and play with it that way. that is a really, really good idea!

Yay for being New England-bound. If you do end up in CT, let me know. i'll give ya the skinny! First stop - the Big E in September. HOLY HELL! the food is ridiculous.

  • The inspiration boards really are awesome. Google a couple :) Im not nearly as artistic as many of the ladies that do them, but it still helped me out a lot.

Thanks for the tip! :) If it were up to me, we'd be moving now. It's not though, so we're waiting and 'seeing' ;)

  • PP's have covered most of it, but I'll add a bit more/reitterate

    - before you ask a question, look to see if it's been answered before (there's a search function at the bottom, though it's not the most user friendly).  If you can find your answer there, awesome, if you can't, then post!

    - don't comment on any threads that are really old, if it was discussed a while ago, it's okay to bring it up again in a new thread if you need advice on it. (although I think the sorting by newest post function is still not working yet)

    - Type in proper English (sentence structure, punctuation, spell check, paragraphs, etc).  Yes, it's only a message board, but since we can only go by what you type, it helps if it's legible.  If you don't type properly, we're going to assume you are either stupid, or you don't care.  Since most people aren't that stupid, it's likely that you just don't care, and if you don't care, why should we take the time to answer?

    - Take things with a grain of salt.  These are international boards and not every person's opinion is going to reflect the norms in your area/social circle.  Don't get defensive if you don't agree, just take the advice into consideration and realize that even if you don't feel certain advice applies to you, it may apply to other people who are lurking and have a similar question.

    - Don't take things too personally.  Some of the advice given on here is very blunt and honest.  If you (or in this case, your sister) are planning to do something that's generally considered to not be a good idea, people will tell you, and they won't beat around the bush about it.  It's nothing personal, but what good does it do to sugar coat things, ya know?

Not going to be mean here,  just want to point a few things out.  Please type like you would speak and check your grammar/spelling.  Capitalize where you should (Your Is) and don't type in text (n for and, ur for your, etc.)  And please do not EVER use the colored font feature.

Welcome and good luck with planning.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Just thought I'd respond to that because I didn't mean EVERYONE here is a total biitch or anything. Didn't want that to be what was taken from what I said!
