Don't trust everything they send you

I had a caterer sent to me, via theknot.com, and I thought I had struck gold. Julie Blalock from Kickin Catering had said she had gotten my information off theknot.com and wanted to know if I was interested in her catering services. After looking at her prices, I said absolutely, being a young bride on a low budget. After meeting with her and discussing a menu, we decided to use her. Not shortly after she had called needing a deposit of $500 to hold the date. Wanting to keep her for my date, I gave it to her right away. She said a contract would be emailed in the near future. The new year came and I still hadn't received one. So I emailed, only to see that the email no longer existed and her website had been cancelled. A friend that is a detective heard about the problem and offered his services. Come to find out, she had moved to South Carolina in December and will no longer be providing services for my wedding. So not only are we out of a caterer 5 months before the wedding, but we are also out $500.

Bottom line, make sure you check and double check when vendors email you with their contact being theknot.com

Re: Don't trust everything they send you

  • You should never ever give money to a vendor without receiving a contract at the same time.  This vendor figured out you were a young bride on a budget and woo'd you with all the right things to get your money.  She is a crook and predator and knew you would be a good target. Never ever hand over money without references, checking them out, and a contract.
  • I'm sorry you were duped.  However you should have never sent money to anyone without a contract.   I'm sorry that was life lesson you learned the hard way.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • That really sucks.  Let this be a lesson learned.  Sorry.
  • I'm so sorry.  :(  You might consider posting this on the SC board so that brides there are aware.
