Let's talk veils...

Starting to pick out my accessories. Here is my dress:
It's in ivory and we willl be adding straps because strapless looks awkward on me.

My hair willl be something like this:
...only my hair is much longer and I'll probably end up with one 4" hairclip instead of multiple pins.

I'd like elbow length veil so that my hair won't be longer than the veil. Other than that...no idea! A quick search turned out one tier, two tier, some with beadings, some with edge linings...seems complicated!

Any advice on how to narrow down some choices, or suggestions what would go with my dress and hairstyle?

Thanks! And please share yours!!

Re: Let's talk veils...

  • First off, I absolutely love that dress, and I'm so mad at myself for not trying on anything lacey.

Second... I also had a really hard time picking out a veil.  I ended up choosing something that complimented my dress, but didn't take anything away from it.  My dress has some sparkly bling on the top and bottom of the dress, so I chose a fingertip-length veil that was edged in crystals... one single tier.

If you want to play up the laceyness of your dress, or if you are going for the romanitc look, I would check out some lace-edged veils.  If you'd rather keep it simple, go for something that has no edging.  Maybe go to a bridal salon and put on a bunch of different styles and see how you feel?

(My MOH has a lacey Maggie Sottero dress and her veil is cathedral-length veil edged with lace and it is one of the most stunning veils I've ever seen!  In case you were even considering other lengths....)

  • One more thing... make sure you get an ivory veil and not a white one  :)

  • I ended up getting a simple ivory finger tip veil with crystals along the edge. My dress is pretty simple so I didn't want to take away from the dress. I have an embellishment along my waist and that is it and it is a ballgown. I went to a salon that specializes in veils so i took my dress and they matched it and made sure it didn't take away from the dress.

I do love cathedral length veils and if you went with that like a simple one, I think it would look really nice since your dress is lace and fitted. Hope this helps.

  • I think a simple cathedral length veil would look stunning with your dress.  I am planning on cathedral length veil as well, but I am STILL torn on the blusher vs. no blusher issue, so I can't help you in the blusher department.

I think it might be best to get a veil with no embellishments or lace - just tulle, with perhaps a simple ribbon edging.  Like Bells said, you don't want to distract from your dress - just have something beautiful and soft and simple to help showcase your dress.  I don't love the "raw edge" veils, I prefer the ribbone edges - they show the border of the veil, but not in a distracting way.

I have also been agonizing over type of veil to get so hopefully this is helpful!!!
  • I think I would try to stay fairly simple with that dress, as well. It's a GORGEOUS dress, and I wouldn't want to be too distracted by a complicated veil. My dress is super sparkly, so I wanted something fairly simple, but with a little bling to help weigh it down since my ceremony is outdoors.

I got lucky-my cousin got married in October and it was INSANELY windy (like 50mph gusts, in the middle of a corn field lol), so she ended up taking off her veil after only a few pictures. So, I'm going to use it :) Probably buy it from her, not sure how much she wants for it. Anyhow, it's exactly what I was looking at anyway, and it's ivory like my dress. It just made my decision a lot easier! Those things can be pricey!

  • Thanks all! Not so sure I want a Cathedral veil, but I will check them out! Wish I could see more pictures of others in my dress with various veils, but not really finding much online. Will keep looking! I do think I should stay away from sparkle in my veil since my dress is all about the lace and not really bling-y.

  • I love your dress...very pretty!!  I went with a cathedral mantilla veil  =)  I wish I would have went a little bit longer with the veil though! but i still LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!! I don't think I'll want to take it off =)
  • LOVE your dress and agree that a cathedral length ceil would be STUNNING!  I wish I had a long dress sometimes so I could have a really long veil!

  • I also have a lace dress. I bought a elbow length veil with lace edging. As others have said, make sure you get your veil in ivory as well! I went to the store and put my dress on when I tried different veils to make sure that the one I bought complemented my dress and didn't take away from it.

  • I went with a fingertip veil with two layers and plain edges. I wanted my veil to be very lightweight, so that was the main reasoning for my choice.

Just go to the bridal salon and try a bunch on (with your dress, if possible) and see what works for you. You can always then buy it somewhere cheaper after you know what style you like, if you don't want to pay salon prices. I kind of wish I had done that!
