"Low" calorie protein shake?

So after doing some reviewing of my diet I realized my protein could probably use a little boost. Also, I've been looking for a way to get some protein in quickly after a work out. I am not a vegetarian, but I don't eat a lot of meat because I don't really like it that much. I will eat chicken and turkey breast as well as fish but it is hard to force myself to eat a lot of it when I don't care for it that much. Every protein shake I look at seems to be loaded with like 300-400 calories which would probably put me way over my calorie limit for the day with my usual meal habits (sticking around 1200). Does anyone have any suggestions for a lower calorie protein shake? Thanks :)

TK is wonky- I don't think I see the OP... but if I want a low cal, high protein shake, I'd just make my own.  I use a banana, 3-4 strawberries (frozen if they're out of season) just a splash of fruit juice (otherwise it's too much sugar) and non fat greek yogurt.  The myfitnesspal estimate has that at 226 calories, 17 grams protein.

Edit:  as soon as my response posted I saw the OP... Have you tried Clif Bars?  I usually have a half a bar before a workout & eat the other half after.  The chocolate chip one is 240 cals, 10g protein.  I have tried various powders but they are harder to digest & some can lead to bloating/gas.  At least that has been my experience.  I try to get my protein in food form, but I do have a kind of sensitive tummy :(
  • That's pretty standard for many protein shakes.  We have the iso chocolate, and it is soooo good.  If you make it with water, then you're getting tons of protein compared to the calorie intake.

I aim for about 60-80 grams of protein per day based on my weight and workout routine.

  • Try the "Aria" brand. It's supposed to be for women and is a bit more cal-friendly..I thin k it comes in at 80 calories a serving. They've got it at our Kroger.

I have Golden Standard 100% Whey protein powder in Chocolate malt (you can find it pretty much anywhere). We chose this one to keep in the house because it doesn't have a ton of extra ingredients and tastes much better than others we've tried.

1 scoop is 120cal, 1g of fat, and 24g of protein.
I usually only do half if I use it since that's a lot of protein.. and mix it with water because it tastes just fine without the milk.

I also don't eat much meat in my diet, but get plenty of protein... What are you eating? Consider adding these things into your diet..
Greek nonfat yogurt (mine is 6g per serving)
    quinoa -8g
    lima beans- 15g
    pistachios- 6g
    kale-5g
    tuna-10g

(of course those are rough estimates based on serving sizes)
  • I suggest using a whey protein isolate in powder form. I use the Dymatize Elite Whey Protein Isolate because it's low-calorie and low-carb... and it tastes delicious! My favorite flavors are Cafe Mocha and Chocolate Mint. Check it out on bodybuilding.com. One scoop gives you 25 grams of protein. If I'm in a hurry I just throw a scoop into some water and chug. Otherwise I mix it with my morning egg whites and oatmeal, or when I'm craving something cold and yummy from Starbucks I blend the Cafe Mocha flavor with some ice, egg whites, Stevia, and Walden Farms chocolate syrup (sugar free, calorie free, fat free, carb free).

<div>Ditto this, I have 100% Whey from GNC (most grocers have a generic brand also) and it's about the same as FTL said. I mix with water too and do just under a scoop. I also love greek yogurt.  FI eats siggy yogurt which has 15g of protein I think.</div>
  • I use EAS Carbadvantage.  17 grams of protein and only 110 calories, very low sugar as well.

  • I second the Aria brand...it's pretty tasty and you can get it at Trader Joe's.  Whole Foods has a store brand that is affordable and tasty and around 100 cals per serving.  I use it for breakfast and post workout...good luck!
