engagement party?

we got engaged in July. I'd love an engagement party to get both our families to mingle, but no one's mentioned it... Is it an ok idea to throw a bbq ourselves just for the mingling opportunity?

Just don't call it an engagement party.  Have a family BBQ and invite both sides.
