Texas-Dallas and Ft. Worth

I'm new

So, I'm recently engaged (yay!)... and in the midst of planning a wedding for June 2011.  I'm making progress considering I can't set a date yet (I'm in the National Guard and am awaiting the release of the 2011 training schedule, which is due out anytime now).
My fiance really wanted an "unconventional" wedding (ok, if he had his way, we'd just elope!)... BUT since I said that was a no-go, he actually said he wanted to help.  His contributions so far are to pick where our ceremony is, make the final colors decision and approve the reception site :)  We'll see how much other involvement he really wants...

We will be having our ceremony in Vegas with a small wedding party, family and close friends.  When we get back from Vegas, we are going to have a reception in Dallas (we live in the Fort Worth area)... which will satisfy my desire for some wedding traditions...

Here's what we've got so far:
-Colors: black, ivory and purple
-Dress: yup, already ordered it...found it, fell in love, it was on sale (David's Bridal), thus I ordered it (plus I'm kinda tall, and it will of course require alteration)
-Bridesmaids: selected the girls, and selected the dresses (simple purple "regency" dresses from David's)
-Groomsmen: selected the guys, and have pretty much figured out there attire (promised the man that they can wear whatever shoes they want, and no jackets, will have ties to match the dresses and black shirts)
-Ceremony location: The Flamingo, great prices/packages, big range of rooms available for guests, central location, fun photo ops... All in one!
-Reception location: La Grange in Deep Ellum, fantastic, fun, beautiful and funky bar that is going to work with us and also has a restaurant side that will do the food for us!  (plus super nice people, but I'm a bit biased towards them since I know them)
-Photography: I've got 3 possibles (some photos are taken care of in Vegas, but I'm going to hire a photographer for more photos in Dallas), one appt set to meet and discuss (Squaresville Studios), 1 I need to contact (David Wilson), and one is the fall-back if the others aren't waht I want/can afford
-Floral: Vegas flowers are covered, but am going to need some basic flowers (bouquet, boutonnieres, wristlets and maybe 1 arrangement) for the reception, I have one contact so far...
-Cake: I have one potential I'm going to research (Cretia's) and 1 fall back ("The Cake Lady")

We are kind of a funky/rocker type couple (who do love being flashy and also appreciate vintage/retro styles).

I have fantastic support from my Mom & SIs in planning (my sister got married last Summer, so they're still in practice).  And my bridesmaids are excited, ready to help and fun (except one may have a major scheduling conflict... ugh!  I will NOT melt down over this until the date is picked).
It's looking like I'm going to get little support/help from my fiance's mom (dad is deceased) financial or otherwise, though his sister will be supportive and help with the guest list, etc.  (not that his mom isn't excited for us, she is just a unique woman)

Ok, I know this was long... but I'm new, and wanted to lay out where I'm at to start!
I'm excited to participate in the boards and give and recieve tips, advice and information!

Thanks!
-Diana

Oooh, I love Vegas weddings!  Sounds like you've got alot done already but let us know if we can help!

Just FYI--I was interested in David Wilson and after an initial e-mail exchange, he became unresponsive.  :(  I always wondered about it too.  Maybe you'll have better luck.

    Congrats and welcome!

Do any of you remember about a year ago when a baker closed and kept the brides money? Was that The Cake Lady? I could be way off.

My mom's friend's daughter got married at the Flamingo and mom said the pictures were AMAZING!!  We even looked into doing our wedding there but family didn't seem to thrilled about going to Vegas, which is just beyond me!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome!

I'm sure as I get further along, I'll have plenty of questions.
(and it is SUPER good to hear that the photos at the Flamingo were great, that's just such an "unknown" variable booking with a package from out of state!)
I don't think everyone is necessarily thrilled about the Vegas thing, but they support what we want luckily :)

On cake:... hmmm... I'm thinking maybe it's a different "Cake Lady" (she might have changed business names, too)?  Its like a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend, and she did my sister's wedding (and grooms) cakes last year and she was fantastic. (just a suburban mom working from home)
