Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day, ladies!!  Just wanted to spread a little green.  :)
A little history:

Originally, the colour associated with Saint Patrick was
blue. Over the years the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick's day grew.[10] Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick's Day as early as the 17th century.[11] He is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish, and the wearing and display of shamrocks and shamrock-inspired designs have become a ubiquitous feature of the day.[12][13] In the 1798 rebellion, in hopes of making a political statement, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on 17 March in hopes of catching public attention.[10] The phrase "the wearing of the green", meaning to wear a shamrock on one's clothing, derives from a song of the same name- Wikipedia

The history of St. Patrick is actually pretty neat - it's too bad that the day is now associated with drunkenness.  I'm not thinking he would be honored by that.

But Happy St. Patrick's Day to you too!

It really is too bad, like Joesgurl said. I actually hate this holiday because of how my hometown behaves on this day. I love the history of it though - thanks for reminding me and sharing!

wow!! that is some awesome history.

i am not Irish, but FI is! and we celebrate by having a traditional irish dinner (cornbeef and cabbage) and hanging out as a family.

in fact last year on St. Patty's was the first day i met FI's family for the first time. (:
my FMIL said it was our "family anniversary" today. hehe. (:

FH and I both have some Irish in us. My family came a few hundred years ago and its possible our "Irish" ancestors may have actually been Welsh, as the remains of our family's estate there (it is only ruins now) have our ancestors buried away from the Irish Catholics because they were Protestant. I still claim to my Irish heritage though!!! I love the history of St Patrick's Day, that it is actually a holiday to commemorate an ENGLISH man, who is credited with bringing God to the Irish pagans. I actually got a tattoo a few years ago of a 3 leaf clover with the Trinity symbol inside, because of the history of St Patrick using it to explain the Trinity during his ministry. It makes me really sad that people get wasted in "celebration" of the holiday and the amount of "gay pride" parades (because of the rainbow that is association with the holiday as well) that occur now also makes me really sad.

Tonight I'm cooking Irish meatballs and mashed potatoes for FH and I in celebration. He also had to have a traditional glass of green brew, which really means he just used food coloring to dye a regular bottle lol. Just the one though, no way do we want to contribute to the drunks that dominate the holiday!

    I'm part Irish. :D

I currently have corned beef cooking on the stove, and I picked up some soda bread and potatoes to go with it. I'm a bit nervous...I've never done it before. Wish me luck!
