If you've had ovarian cysts come on in

I think this may be one of my issues.

Since Saturday night I've had this pain in my left side. It's almost near my groin but up a little. I know that makes no sense. Definitely not in my abdomen but more in my pelvis.

It alternates from being stabby pain to a dull ache. Tylenol, Advil, and Aleve haven't helped the pain. It radiates down into my left leg. I thought it was my sciatica but that always gets better after a night of sleep but this isn't. I go to sleep with it hurting, and it hurts when I wake up. I've got a heating pad on it but that's not really helping.

I'm on Cycle Day 7 if that makes any difference.

I'm toying with going to the doctor but if it's a cyst I know there isn't much they can do other than give me pain meds. Compounded with my other sickness, I may just do that and take a medicated nap.

Re: If you've had ovarian cysts come on in

  • if it's a cyst, unless it's big, they will take a wait and see approach and give you the good meds. they'll recheck in a month or so unless you keep having issues.

if it's big and/or not simple (fluid filled), they might want to do a laparoscopy to remove it.

danger of a cyst growing larger is it can cause torsion on your ovary and lead to permnant damage.
  • can you feel it?
  • I vote you still go in.
Because all cysts are NOT the same.

I mean, I know that my weirdness was super weaird, but one of the reasons they went in and removed those 'otherwise harmless' growths is that if I had a lot of pain--kinda like what yoiur'e describing, it could mean that the dermoid cyst had twisted and was cutting off blood supply and could kill the ovary.  They said it was relatively rare but that left unchecked, it could knock out an ovary awfully fast.
  • Are you sure it hasn't ruptured? I only ask because I have PCOS- and i've had cysts rupture, and if you don't go to the dr. it can be deadly, does your cycle normally last 7 days? Is it off in anyway?

  • (barbie said that better)
  • So funny that you mention this today, because mine has been extra painful the last three days. A little background: I'm 28, otherwise totally healthy and had a sudden appendicitis over the summer. The ER surgeon informed me that she also saw several ovarian cysts (small but obvious) on both ovaries on the CT. She called them "common" but still something to keep track of. While I've always had very painful periods, I just dealt with it and thought nothing more. The pathology came back on my appendicitis and confirmed me as having endometriosis which I always suspected but it's nice to know for sure. ;)

Regarding the cysts... boy does the right side hurt, and it's always worse for 5-7 days just before ovulation. I actually had little pain last month, so I'm assuming I ovulated on the left side. For whatever reason, the right side is brutal right now. The pain almost completely disappears once my period actually starts. The pain radiates down my leg as well and even into my foot! The pain is irritating on the inner portion of my shin and the inside arch of my right foot. It's so bizarre. To make it worse, if you research online, stories of ovarian cancer abound, but I had a full blood workup and exam and was assured I'm fine. I called my gyno two months ago and requested an emergency visit because of the pain. He was COMPLETELY unconcerned. He did a full exam, and said, and I quote "This is a totally normal exam..minus the fact that you have some cysts. Get pregnant to fix the pain". I was kind of shocked but also relieved that he was so easygoing about it.

I fear it growing larger and larger or rupturing, but his approach is totally wait and watch. My fiance is a paramedic and has assured me that I'll seriously "KNOW" if it ruptures or is causing torsion. Feeling suddenly dizzy, out of breath, being sweaty and in severe abdominal pain are all cause for an emergency room visit.

Hope this helps you a bit in feeling like you're not alone. Aside from just knowing it's there, I feel zapped of my normal energy for the last 6-8 months. Hopefully, the pregnancy part really will help, because that's a pretty awesome cure if it works into your plans. :)
