M&Ms?

We're doing M&Ms as our favors (I'm Meredith and FI is Matt, hence the M&M) and ordering them from the M&M website in our wedding colors.  We're going to put them in a small 3'x4' organza bag for each guest at their place setting.  My question is, for anyone that's done this before, do you have any idea how much I should get for a wedding of 150 people?  They come in 5 lb bags and I was hoping to get away with one bag of each color.  If it comes down to it, I'll just go out and buy some regular M&Ms, weigh one bag's worth and do the math...but thought it couldn't hurt to ask!

Re: M&Ms?

  • I was going to do the M&M thing until FI wanted Koozies (long story). Anywho...I orginally went and bought the 5lb equivilant. I was surprised at how much it would take for 150 ppl. Try it and see. I'm visual so it helped me a lot to see the bags in person.

  • We are doing personalized m&m's for my daughter's wedding ( about 130 people) and we bought 15 lbs...I don't know how full your organza bags will look, but I kinda feel like 5 lbs isn't really enough..here is the math we came up with when we were deciding how much to buy (I have altered it for your 150 guests):

    5 lbs x 16 oz/lb=80 oz
80oz divided by 150 guests=.53oz (as in half an ounce or 1/3 of a regular bag)

A regular bag of m&m's is 1.69 oz, for reference

Our 15lbs gives each guest slightly more than a regular bag's worth (1.85oz).

If cost is an issue, you can always get some personalized and mix them with some that are not personalized-you can get non-personalized custom colors for $58.00 for a 5lb bag, saving $70.00!

Also, something we discovered-if you choose the message option ("your words on M&M's") you get to choose two different messages....but if you choose the picture option ("Words and faces on M&M's") and choose messages only you get to create four different messages on your candies for the same price as the two-message-only option (we weren't interested in pictures so don't know if that affects the price or not).  And, be sure to check often as it gets closer to time to order them, as they sometimes have a free shipping special, which saved us
    $40!

  • just remember in a small see through bag like that, it might look empty with less than a bag's worth...the nice thing about the bags in the grocery store is they are flat, but you don't see how many are in there...If I were to get a bag from the store, I would not want to see only one layer, flat with lots of spaces in between, I would want to SEE a full bag.  I am afraid you won't have enough...People are visual.  If they see one flat layer, or just a few on the bottom of a bag with 2-3 inches of empty space, they may feel like there was not enough to make it worth it.  go get a few bags from the store, and see what it looks like...I would not put less than one grocery store single serving in one of those bags...good luck with all of your figuring!
  • The bags are about the size of 1/3 the regular M&Ms bag - 3'x4' is actually not very big.  I wish I could get a bag that's a little bigger, but the next size up I can find is about 5'x6', which is WAY too big.  According to Loveslug's math, with 10 lbs of M&Ms I'll have 1.06 oz per guest, or 2/3 a regular size bag from the grocery store.  I will definitely try it, but I think that will make the bags look more than full.
  • Michael's sells the single colored m & ms in different wedding colors.  They come in a 7 lb bag.
  • I got all of mine from Michaels.  If you sign up for emails on their website, they send out weekly coupons, usually for 40% off.  My fiance and I both went in to MIchaels once a day for about a week and purchased all the M&Ms we needed.  Just a tip to hopefully save ya a few dollars! =)
