Hello *i'm new* and a dress question

Hello everyone. I've been lurking the boards until I finally got my ring.
My names Sara and my other half is Kevin.
Our wedding date is set for November 11,2011 our colors are blue, black and white. Where big into the standardbred harness racing and those are also our barn colors. We are getting married at my parents house. I posted in the chit chat about it, not to happy since my mother said no one was going to come unless I had it at her house. So it kind of put a damper on the whole thing. But I'm just getting back to being excited now looking for a dress!

I also have a dress question. I have 3 months and something odd weeks to go and still no dress. I've been to deb in the mall I've been to davids bridal I've been other places as well. I've tried on dresses everywhere. I can not find a single one I like in a good prince range. I can't see paying 5-900$ for a dress. I just can't. I've been looking on craigslist and davids bridal online. Has anyone had any luck finding a dress online? And am I really pushing getting a dress this late?

Thanks for the intro and welcome to the board!  Congrats on the engagement!!!

As for your question... do you know what kind of dress you are looking for?  If looking to save $$, you might want to think outside the box and try looking at dresses that don't carry a "wedding" label.  Something about the word "bride" or "wedding" raises the price big time!!!

If you are ok with a more simple design, try looking at bridesmaid dresses... they often can be ordered in white... and for 1/10 the price of a wedding dress.

Also, stores like Macys, Nordstrom, J Crew and even Target now carry wedding/bridesmaid lines... I have seen some gorgeous dresses for less than $200.

There are also TONS of websites where girls sell their used (or even new) wedding dresses for veeeery cheap.  Try the Classifieds section of The Knot, The Nest trash to Treasure, www.oncewed.com, www.recycledbride.com or www.preownedweddingdresses.com

Welcome to the board!! Have you tried the knot classifieds?  There are alot of girls selling dresses on there.  You could always do that and have alterations done somewhere local.  My wedding is October 15th and my first fitting isn't until Labor day weekend.  So if you find a dress now you have plenty of time to have it altered.  You probably won't have enough time though to buy one and wait for it to come in AND have alterations (my dress took 3 months just to get to the bridal shop).  Hope this helps a little bit :)

It sounds like a sketchy site, but it's just like ebay. Just have to check the sellers ratings. I had them CUSTOMIZE a dress (it was the top of one dress and the bottom of another one) and it only cost $250. Stupid me, the one I chose the bottom of was the wrong one (but it was soooo hard to tell in the pics because it's SO close to the dress I wanted) It's sitting in my closet and I ended up buying a $1200 dress instead. I'm an idiot. If it wasn't for my mistake I would be wearing it.

thank you ladies! def. looking into everything you guys meantioned!  thank you all so much. I just didn't know if I was real behind in getting a dress. I did notice some took 3 months to come in so that's pry not an option any longer. But that's ok I'm going to check other places since I do want simple.

Alvina Valenta, Jim Hjelm Occasions and Noir by Lazaro make beautiful bridesmaid dresses that are available in ivory. The only person who would know they weren't meant to be bridal gowns is the one footing the bill.

I was going to suggest bridesmaids dresses also!  Check out Alfred Angelo too.  They also carry ivory (maybe even white) bridesmaid dresses, and are pretty reasonably priced.  Welcome to the board!

Not sure where exactly you're located but if you're around Syracuse, Spybaby Boutique. I got my prom dress there and the staff is nothing short of amazing. I had 3 people running around finding me what I wanted and grabbing shoes and jewelry to help show me what I could wear. loved it.

Hi Sara -- good name -- my name is Sarah!  Welcome!

All the suggestions above are great ones!  You could also check out White House Black Market and The Limited who recently started bridal lines.  Not sure about pricing, but it's probably under $500.

Oh yeah I thought they were great. This was also in 2003 so maybe staff has changed. And I didnt call. I went right in and looked around and they came right over and took the dresses I had and then went off in search of dresses that matched what I liked and such. It was great.

I actually still wear that dress. Not sure if my +20lbs since dating Josh would fit in it now, but I wont get rid of it.

Strange.  I called to ask about their hours and the valley girl who answered said "(annoyed loud sigh) DON"T you have an appointment?"

I told her I did not, but I would really like to know what their hours were so I can figure out what works best for me.

She fired back "Well, you can't just stop in.  You need an appointment."

Riiiiight.... I got that, cupcake, but the question I asked was "what are your hours" not "can I stop in without an appointment"....  I told her that actually I would not be needing an appointment... not there at least.  Snot.

I got my dress at Spybaby!  And I love them!  They've been really accommodating and helpful so far for me.  It's always crowded there though even when you have an appointment; I think it's just because the space is so small.
