Don't know where to go!

I have no idea where to go on our honeymoon! We want to go somewhere that is warm, but not TOO hot in mid-May. We've been on a cruise and to the Domincan, so we don't want to do either of those places.

I was thinking Hawaii or Tahiti...but I wonder if it will be too hot at that time of year.

Any ideas??

Re: Don't know where to go!

  • I've been to both Hawaii and Tahiti a few times. First, what is your budget? How long are you looking to go somewhere with that budget? Second, what is too hot? I live in PHX and think anything over 105 is a bit much and anything under 80 is chilly. So, we all have different perceptions.

  • Puerto Rico was super fun, tons of things to do, affordable and beautiful....
Florida also works for "warm" or "freaking hot" LOL....

    Haha, I'm the same way.

Just a quick search on weather.com shows that the average high temperature for Maui in May is 84* with less than an inch of rain for the month.  Tahiti averages 85* with around 3.5 inches of rain for the month.

Like Jells mentioned though, budget will play a role with your decision.  I've come to find out by booking my own HM that Tahiti is, in fact, very expensive.  We've been saving since the beginning of 2011 for it.

  • I don't have a budget - so pretty much anything goes. And too hot is anything over 90ish degrees or too much humidity (I live in southern Ontario and the humidity is a killer in the summer!!)

  • We're kinda in the same boat. We have no clue where we wanna go. We want beaches and warmth, preferably a tropical atmosphere. Also we kinda wanna avoid places we have friends so we don't feel obligation to visit them (Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, London, Guatemala) Also, we enjoy the feeling of culture shock. So English not being a main language is a plus. We're planning for Sept so it has to be someplace with warm, summer, bikini weather around that time. Thanks in advanced for any & all suggestions.
  • We married in Bermuda at the beginning of May.  High 70s.  Clear skies.
  • It is NEVER too hot in Hawaii.

  • Tahiti in December will be a bit more humid since it's their summer and it may also be a little more moist, but you also happen to get the biggest bang for your buck as long as you aren't traveling over the holidays. A lot of hotels add on compulsory dinners and such for Xmas Eve and NYE and they end up being $200pp. That being said, I think doing 4 nights in Moorea and 4 nights in Bora Bora is a good place to start. You can always adjust the number of nights and what resorts you like based on your budget. I would not stay on any one island more than 5 nights (maybe 6) and an airpass will allow you to island hop. I have stuck to one island on a trip, did two on most, and have even hopped between 4! In general, though, a week in Tahiti with an overwater bungalow for part of your stay in Bora Bora will run around the $8K range. That does not include food or activities. I'd say the average trip is more along the lines of $10K for 8-9 nights. Trips can easily go up into the $20K range or if you're not picky on resort or room category, you can find something in the $6K-$7K range. I've also used hotel points and airline miles to help offset some of the costs, but for the most part, my trips have averaged around $12K (two of them were more, most of them were closer to $10K.) I'm happy to recommend resorts, but I like to know more about what the person is looking for before I do so. Example: I'd hate to recommend the Pearl in Bora Bora if a person really wants something modern, chic, and more of larger resort! My personal favs are Le Taha'a, the Moorea Hilton, and the Tikehau pearl. The Kia Ora in Rangiroa was just renovated, so I imagine I'd LOVE it there since the island is fantastic, but the hotel was just so-so (it was older.) I can't wait to go back!

Hawaii in December will be cooler than Tahiti, especially humidity wise, but also the chance to be more moist. Again with the holidays- Xmas and NYs there are packed and rates go up significantly. My personal favs are Princeville in Kauai, The Four Seasons Lanai, or the Four Seasons Maui. I do not like Oahu, but some people love it there. It depends on what you are looking for.
