Soldering your e-ring & wedding band together??

hey ladies,

We finally picked out and purchased my wedding band today, yay! :) While we were there, the saleswoman mentioned coming back after the wedding to get the 2 rings soldered together. She said alot of brides have that done, so that one doesn't get lost etc... has anyone done that, or are you planning to? I've honestly never thought of that before, and it just seems like it would look strange underneath... although I'm sure they do a great job. Just curious if this is a common thing?? TIA!

Re: Soldering your e-ring & wedding band together??

  • Never heard of it before, but I also don't know many people who've gotten married recently. I am planning on buying a wrap, so my engagement ring isn't likely to get lost anyway.
  • I'm planning on getting them soldered together. Aside from keeping the rings together, it also prevents them from scratching against each other.
From my understanding, it's supposed to be pretty inconspicuous and shouldn't look weird. I haven't talked to my jeweler in depth about it yet, but as of now that's my plan :)

  • I talked to my jewler about this.  My mother did this with hers (she was remarried 13 or so years ago) and the jewler recommended it for me because of the way my bands will sit next to each other. They line up, but my wedding band is actually considered to be an enhancer (because it fit better next to my pear cut diamond), so to make them stay lined up perfectly I could solder them together.  The jewler also suggested it because my e-ring has a decorated band which the jewler said could rub down if the band keep rubbing against each other.  The more I think about the more I think I will do it.

  • I want to be able to wear my wedding band alone, so I'm not doing that.  However, I've heard it keeps them from rubbing against each other, pinching your skin in some cases.  I don't know about 'getting lost' because I would take just as good care of them together as apart!  They're not cheap!

  • A lot of the women in my family have soldered their rings together. I probably won't though, because I want the option of just wearing my band. In my career I wear gloves A LOT and want the option of being able to take off the e-ring so it won't catch on the latex etc.
As for losing the rings - hopefully your rings are insured to prevent a possible loss from becoming a big deal?

  • I've seen it before and it looks normal, like one ring, as long as it's done correctly. I've heard that by making the band thicker, more moisture could build up underneath the band causing discoloring. Soldering prevents the two rings from scratching against each other, but you can't wear them separately (if you ever want to).

  • A friend of mine has it done and you can't even tell.  I plan on doing it because my e-ring has a split shank band so it was difficult to find a wedding band to match.  Since it has to line up perfectly I will have it soldered.  Plus, my wedding band has a little "dip" where my e-ring is so I won't ever wear it alone.  I do plan on getting a fake wedding band though (probably with cubic zirconias) to wear to work.  I bartend and I have lost a ring taking out the garbage before so I don't want that to happen with something expensive but still want to acknowledge that I'm married.  I hardly wore my e-ring at work last summer so I want something a little more subtle to wear there.

  • Like PPs said, yes, it is a common thing, but it depends on if you want to be able to wear your wedding band on its own.  For people that have a band that shadows the shape of their engagement ring, it does help them stay lined up.  It definitely helps keep the rings from rubbing against each other which wears down the metal.  Assuming it's done correctly, you shouldn't really be able to see where they've done it unless you take the rings off and look at the seam.  The jeweler should only solder the rings together at the bottom of the shank of the ring so that it's not noticeable from the top.  It's usually only tacked together in a small area so that they can easily be taken apart again later if you choose.

I haven't soldered mine together because I like wearing my band on its own.

  • A friend of mine has hers done and I didn't even know she did until she took off her rings off and showed me.
  • I'm not planning on doing it primarily because if I'm traveling somewhere that I would not be comfortable wearing my engagement ring then at least I'll still have my wedding band on!

  • thanks ladies! i'm surpised this is such a common thing. i'm not sure if i'll ever want to wear my band on its own, so i don't think i'll get them soldered... at least not yet.definitely something to think about though!
