Rant: I can't count

When we booked our reception venue, I originally estimated 150 guests. I figured we would have to narrow an original head count down to just close friends and family. After signing the final contract, I went with a more conservative approach thinking that it's a Friday wedding...so we went with 125. We have a leeway of 25% of the overall guest list for the "minimum". Now that I actually have a set guest list it's not anywhere near 150...I barely have 100! What the heck was I thinking?!?! I'm afraid that we're going to have to pay for "empty" plates b/c I can't count. I'm so mad at myself, I can't even see straight!!

Our count was much lower than we orginally anticipated - due to the fact that 90% of our guests were OOT and the shape of the current economy. We negotiated with our venue and instead of paying for "empty" plates, we upgraded to the highest bar package and linens. That way we were still getting something for our money.

Bummer. But maybe the vendor will let you put the 'extra plate' money elsewhere? Like upgrade your liquor package instead to top shelf, or throw in extra dessert or a cake, etc, so at least your money isn't totally wasted? I'd negotiate with them, good luck!

I just got off the phone with my FI and I was sort of freaking out. I thought about that though, I have no problem paying that money in upgrades, food, drinks, linens, dessert, whatever...I just don't want to waste it. I'm just hoping that our venue will be flexible.

Hey there - try not to worry too much. I imagine that in these hard ecomonic times, people aren't RSVPing "yes" to weddings as much as they used to be. I know I had to say No to one recently (not a close friend, more of an acquaintance). My point in mentioning that, is maybe reception venues are seeing couples not fulfill their "minimums" more often now? As PP's said, hopefully they'll be able to accomodate some upgrades for you and won't make you pay for empty plates. Good luck, and keep your head up!

is the min you have to meet a dollar amount or a guest count? if it's a dollar you can add all sorts of stuff i'm sure or upgrade what you're serving for dinner.  We added late night snacks and upgraded our bar.  I'm sure the venue will be able to accomodate you.  I wouldn't stress yet.
