Birth Control & Babies

I know we've discussed something like this in the past, but FI and I were talking about when we'd like to start trying.

I am on NuvaRing and we are trying to figure out when I should stop. I would like to give my body a chance to adapt and get my cycles back to normal before we start trying. We are thinking of starting to try in spring/summer 2013 and I am thinking about stopping in December.

I know it'll be different for everyone, but I just worry that we will have a hard time getting pregnant right away, so that's why we are talking about stopping a few months before actually trying.

Do you guys have a plan yet? Would like to see what other ladies are doing.

I also heard that if you plan on getting pregnant- you should start the prenatal vitamins as early as 6-12 months before trying. This is new to me. I have a physical next month and I will be asking my doctor questions.

  • I plan on going off of the pill right after the wedding and then we'll be doing NFP (Natural Family Planning) after.  Ideally, we'd like to wait at least a year before conceiving, but won't be upset if it happens sooner.

My gyno said as soon as your cycle is regular after going off of BC, your body is ready to conceive, so it really just depends on your body.  She said it averages 3-6 months, but obviously can happen sooner or later, as well.

Not sure about the vitamins... never heard of taking them before getting pregnant.

  • We want to try right away.  However I am not going off of the pill until we get back from our HM.  Once we get back from the HM I will finish my pack that I am on and that will be it.  I have already been taking prenatal vitamins for about 3 months now.  It can't hurt it is pretty much a multivitamin I buy over the counter ones at walmart that are super cheap!!

Once I get my first period off of the pill we will start to try.  My gyno said not to go off of the pill until we are ready b/c you are the most fertile when you stop.  I have had 5 friends who all got pregnant right away so hopefully we are just as lucky.

I think your plan sounds great stopping in december to try for that spring.

What exactly is Natural Family Planning? I looked it up and I am a bit confused, thought you probably will be able to explain better!

  • We are waiting until Christmas to start trying. I plan to stop taking bc around Thanksgiving (or whenever the pack finishes in that time frame) and we will start trying soon after that. My sister listened to her doctor about the 3-6 months after going off of bc and ended up getting pregnant about a month before her wedding! So believe me you can definitely be fertile as soon as you stop taking them!

I only started reading this, but it is a wealth of really good info so far.  Definitely pick it up.

NFP is basically just becoming aware of your cycle and learning when you're ovulating by keeping track of your monthy cycle.  It uses charting (calendar), cervical mucous (yum...), and basal body temp.  You mostly hear about it within the Catholic community because they don't believe in birth control, but we're going to use it because I don't want to be on synthetic hormones anymore.
The rhythm method (natural family planning) works to some extent, but does have a fairly high failure rate, so the plan to use it only when you're ready to be pregnant is a good one.Posted by Schatzi13
A lot of people who follow the NFP method argue that NFP and the 'Rhythm Method' are not the same because of the charting and temperature taking.  They feel that everything is so closely monitored that it is vastly different from the Rhythm Method which is more like guessing.

I am not saying that I am one of these people but I know that this argument is often made.
  • Ok, I was taking a break, but I can't stay away that well :)

I'm on the Nuvaring too, and it is not the same as the pill. While with the pill, it usually takes about 3-6 months to get your regular cycle back, although you risk getting pregnant as soon as you quit, with the ring your cycle should be back to normal much sooner, because the hormones are applied much more locally and in a much lower dosis.

I'm not sure yet when I'll stop with mine - maybe Mayish, but I definitely don't want my period on my wedding day, so maybe later. At first I was thinking after the honeymoon, but I can't wait to start trying and I think it would be nice to know that there's a possibility we conceive on our honeymoon.

I visited my doctor last week. He prescribed me medication and I asked if this could have an effect regarding pregnancy and conceiving, which was not the case, but he did tell me to start on folium acid already, just to be sure.

  • I spoke with my doctor about it around a year before the wedding. At that time, we were planning to start trying right away (we are waiting a bit now, just because we want to enjoy each other a little more)

At that time, my doctor said if I wanted to start preparing my body, I should avoid alcohol, make sure I am eating well and exercising, and to start taking prenatal vitamins three months before we were actively trying. Different doctors may suggest different things, though.

I stopped taking BCP in September and have been charting my cycles and attempting FAM (Fertility awareness method/natural family planning) to avoid pregnancy since Decemberish.

I'm getting my period every 28 days which you would think means my cycle is normal, but my temps are off which, from everything I've read, is caused by coming off BCP. I don't know if that means I would get pregnant right now or not, but my cycles almost seem anovulatory (no ovulation happening).

If I were you I would come off the pill in November/December of 2012, it's hard to tell how each person's body will react to coming off of hormones but I'd give your body more time than you think you need.

As for Prenatal vitamins, I've heard the same thing (6 months-a year), I take these gummy ones: http://www.amazon.com/Vitafusion-Prenatal-Gummy-Vitamins-90-Count/dp/B003IP8BC8/ref=cm_rdp_product and they're delicious!

  • I would say stop the nuva ring sooner rather than later to give your body time to adjust.  Sometimes it can take a while for things to get back to normal with ovulation and cycle length, etc.  My FI and I did Natural Family Planning method (temping, charting, cervical mucous, position of uterus, etc) for about 2 years to not get pregnant and then when we were ready for our second daughter we got pregnant the first month we were trying bc I knew everything there was to know about my cycle and my body and all the signs of ovulating, etc.  I actually have an IUD in right now but plan to get it out later this month so that we can start TTC in October for our 3rd baby.  Taking charge of your fertility is an excellent book.  There are tons of online sites to help with charting your cycles.  I used Fertility Friend starting a few month before we started TTC last time and really liked it.  The message boards can be really full of drama but the charting program is great.  Feel free to PM me with any questions.  My life is all things baby!
In Response to Re: Birth Control & Babies : Ah, you're right. (Thanks, Google!) The rhythm method is only one part of NFP. Sorry, I'm not catholic, so didn't know this. Also, not related to the above point but to this post, I've been told 3-6mos if we decide to remove my Mirena IUD, which emits progesterone at a lower dosage than the progesterone-only pills.

<div>Catholics also you Natural family planning they just abstain from sex during their fertile periods instead of using some sort of barrier. FAM or fertility awareness method is when couples use some form of a barrier during their fertile times. </div><div>
</div><div>The rhythm method is completely unreliable because most wome do not ovulate on day 14 of their cycle. The rhythm method assumes that all women do. </div><div>
</div><div>I am Catholic and I just wanted to clear that up :):):)</div>

  • We plan on trying in Jan 2013. I'm thinking I will go off BC in October and just wait and see what happens. I will start FAM (fertility awareness method) in January to track my cycles and try and concieve.

I'm really nervous about getting pregnant too early though so ill see how I fell when that happens.

  • Oh, babies. :) I love them, but FI and I aren't ready to have kids right now. Things will be financially tight, I'll be finishing school and working full-time, and we want to enjoy being married and living together for a few years. FI is gone to school in GA, but will graduate in June. I'm planning to start the Nuvaring on the first day of my period in June before our July 1st wedding.

I'm so excited for all of you who will be having kids right away! What an adventure!

  • Oh babies!!!  I'm on the BCP!  I'll actually be off of BC in August because I will be on my last pack that is covered by my parent's insurance...once I'm married i"m off...so no insurance until I can get on FI's!  So we'll see!!  We actually talked about this the other day, and we realized that we'll never be ready for kids, financially, mentally, emotionally...I mean we will to some extent, but I hope you understand we're I"m getting at....So, we're just going to see if it happens.  If I get into my program, then I'll have to get on it that way we have a lesser chance...but we shall seeeee!!!! I'm super excited, we finally agreed on a boys name! haha we'll see if we stick with it!
  • Im so jealous of all you who are going to start trying right away. I want a baby, but I still think that I am so young- 22, so i know im not ready to be a mom just yet, and fi and i have not lived together yet. We want a few years to live together, and be married. FI wants to wait til student loans are paid off. I think 3 years we may start trying...

I feel so old! Ha! We want 1 or 2 more & I want to have yhem soon since I'll be 31...gasp...in 2 weeks! I'm nervous about having boys...we are so used to having our girls...it would just be really different. I'm sure we'd be just fine. I just feel like I'd be a bad boy mom.
