kid's meal question

Hi Ladies!  It has been forever since I have been on - the wedding is getting close, I have been crazy busy!I am inviting kids to the wedding, and my venue has a less expensive meal option for kids 12 and under (chicken nuggets, french fries, apple sauce).  They say that kids 4 and under can attend free, because they can just eat of their parent's plate. I think that a 4 year old should definitely get his/her own meal.  Beyond this, I have no idea.  My sister, who has a son that is 18 months, thinks that I should use 3 as the cutoff.  I have a bridesmaid (who also has a son that is 18 months) was outraged that I would even think about not giving her son a meal.  Anyway, at what age do you think a child should have his or her own meal? Thanks for the help!!!

Re: kid's meal question

  • I would leave it up to your guests. If they think their child needs a meal, let them get a meal. An age cutoff seems silly.

  • My best friend's little boy is about a 16 months old and he eats his own chicken nuggets at home and the times we've gone out to eat with him, they usually order him something off the kid's menu.  They don't end up getting to eat much of their own dinner if they don't order him his own.  I would go with a cut-off of 12-18 months, OR just simply ask the parents of the kids you know are coming what they prefer.

  • How many kids to you have?  If it's not a lot I would just ask the parents.    I didn't have any kids that young, but I had some in the 10 years old range and we asked the parents if they kid would prefer chicken tenders or the adult meal of filet.  It was half and half on who ordered what.

  • I agree with Fish, I think that depends on the child and parents some kids under 4 would eat the chicken fingers meal and some wont, I say give the parents the option.
  • My venue uses 2yrs old as a cut off, I agree 4 is a little old and should have his/her own plate.  Maybe you can work something about with them and have a chicken finger plate for kids under 4 for 1/2 the kids price
  • At 18 months many kids are eating quite a bit. My nephew is 16 montsh and last time he came to dinner he ate a full ear of corn, a hotdog( cut up) and a cup of mandarine orange slides that seems like more food then your kids meal and definatly a lot to eat off a normal plate serving size. I would get kids meal for kids 1-12
  • I would say that 3 is even too old to be eating off the parents' plates.  I'm thinking back many years now, but I know that my son was eating his own meals between a year and 18 months.  I also think that 12 is too old for the upper age limit as well.  My kids are 11 and 13 and they have both been eating adult sized meals for a couple of years now.  Especially my 13 year old son.  The kid can pack the food away!
  • They say that kids 4 and under can attend free, because they can just eat of their parent's plate.I like the assumption that the parent wants to share their food with their 4 year old.  Yes I know some parents will and do.  But hey maybe I'm hungry that day and want the same about of food the other guests get to have.

  • Thanks, ladies!  I will just call the parents and see what they would like.
