How many should groom's cake serve?

Friends of mine have told me that groom's cakes aren't popular everywhere, but they are here in south Louisiana =)What I'm trying to figure out is how many ours should serve. We're estimating 175 guests at our wedding.  We definitely want enough cake but not so much that there's a ton left over. Any knowledge/tips on the matter?

  • As long as your groom's cake and wedding combined are enough to serve everyone, it should be fine. That depends on whether you're serving the cakes for dessert (I'm assuming no) or presenting it on some sort of buffet table in addition to another dessert. FWIW we were advised by our cake lady to order enough for half of our guests because it was part of a dessert buffet, and unfortunately it wasn't nearly enough. :(

  • We are getting 100 servings of wedding cake and 75 servings of groom's cake for our 100 guests. The groom's cake is an unusual flavor (carrot), so we know not everyone will want some. Since we're all big sweet tooths I'm not worried about leftovers.
  • Yeah we definitely don't want to have too little... It's our only sweet (besides fruit platter, which I don't consider a dessert). The entree-type food is also buffet so people will sort of "graze" with that AND with dessert.

  • Ooh if it's your only dessert, then definitely order enough for everyone. Also, if it's a different flavour from your wedding cake, some people will take seconds. Maybe 150 servings of wedding cake + 50 servings of groom's cake or so.

  • since when does carrot cake = unusual? It might not be everyone's favorite, but I don't think it's considered unusual. Unusual, IMO, would be pink lemonade or any other of those newer flavours.

  • I'm not the one to ask--I had a ton of cake left over!  (We served our groom's cake (carrot) at the RD.  We had way too much, and a ton left on the wedding cake too.  But, I love cake, so I was glad.)But, I'm in south Louisiana, too--Baton Rouge.  Where are you?
  • It's just a little unconventional, P2. So many wedding cake flavors are pretty inoffensive (unless you're one of those people who really hates chocolate cake), but a lot of folks just don't like carrot cake at all. My mom is actually allergic to carrots, so she'll just stick to wedding cake.
  • It ended up serving about half of our guests and we got it in a different flavor than the wedding cake to give the guests some option.  We had enough servings for 150 (140 guests total) and we still had a ton leftover.  I think it's just inevitable
