Who'd you get it from?

I'm bored to tears and the confessions thread earlier today got me thinking- I am much more like my mother than I ever expected to be.  I get my social anxiety, need for control, and thick thighs from her.  I also get my love of reading, addiction to solitaire and enjoyment of fashion reality shows from her.

So who made you who you are?  The good, the bad, the ugly, the funny- bring it on to kill the boredom, please!

Re: Who'd you get it from?

  • I got my looks mostly from my dad. But my personality is my mom made over.
I got the smartassness from her, my morbid sense of humor, very realistic and observant, i'm fiesty just like her and with all this going on, I still manage to keep my lady-like image.

  • Well my dad was nice enough to give me his dry hair, eyes, and skin.  While I am more like my mom in personality, I am definitely not a spitting image of either.  In fact, I think my brother and I are a lot alike.
  • I made H promise to slap me if I ever get to be too muh like my mother.  He promised to slap me hard ;-)

    Lets see...

Mother - got my refinement, had the etiquette do's and don'ts drilled into my head, and my appreciation for "the finer things" and old antique things.

    Father
    - got my sense of humor and the ability to see the absurdity in life, my ability to see how things work and fit together, and the ability to find a repair man when things don't go to plan.  Also got my "is your time worth more than paying someone to do the job" mentality.

Sister - my love of reading.  When I was reading was the only time my mom made her "leave me alone"

My skating coach - in my younger years I think I spent more time with her than my family!  I learned to "do it again" until you get it right.  Learned that in life you often have less than two minutes to be perfect.  You don't always get do overs.  That it takes a team to get you to where you are, but it's up to you and you alone to deliver what's expected of you.  When you fail, you fail not only yourself, but the whole team.  You are always being judged, from the minute you walk in the door.  The details count.  Points ARE taken off for sloppiness.

WOW, reading that, those are some pretty serious lessons to learn at 9 yrs old!

I have my dad's large hands, but my mom's long fingers. I have my dad's family's nose, my mom's mouth, and my paternal grandmother's eyes. Depending on who I stand next to/who you know, that's who I resemble. I always claimed my brother and I weren't really related, but it's hard to deny it when we look this much alike:

( this is my brother and my aunt - I also favor her - she's my mom's sister).

  • Missy, my sister looks like Alyssa Milano, and well, I do not.  We could be standing right next to each other and no one would assume we were related.

Suprisingly when my neice was born, everyone swore she looked just like MY baby pictures.

  • Dad - ability to tell the same story over and over and over again but never remember the first 10 times. Computer know-how and passion for learning new technologies.

Mom - Concern about finances. Love for gardening. Desire to fix things.

Honestly, as I grow up I realize that if I can be half as good of a parent as they were, I would be happy. We've been through a lot as a family and I don't know how they did it with such grace and happiness.

Oh, and I look exactly like whichever parent someone meets first.
  • aMrs, our mothers taught us the same things.  My mother has always been so refined and proper- writing thank you notes and proper table manners were ingrained in us from a young age.

But now that I'm older I'm seeing a different side to her.  I was shocked- utterly, jaw-dropping shocked- when she said "crotchless panties" yesterday.  I can't believe she even knows what they are, and I can't imagine how she's heard of them- certainly not on NPR!

  • I look exactly like my mom, except she's a blonde and I'm a brunette.  My personality is mostly from my dad, but I did inherit my mom's anxiety.

It's a running joke that I inherited the medical oddities from both sides of my family.

  • According to my grandmother, I get my reddish hair from her Aunt Emily.  According to my mother, this is impossible because Aunt Emily married into the family.  Grandma doesn't seem to understand why that matters.

  • My father cannot multitask AT ALL.  I break his chops about it all the time, but I have to admit that I have a little trouble myself.  I also look more like my dad than my mom.

  • Oh yeah - my aunt and I share all sorts of maladies - we always let each other know if we've been diagnosed with something, because chances are, the other one will get it. I have, however, managed to avoid thyroid cancer, and to my knowledge, she's managed to avoid chondromalacia patella. I looked for this one pic of my brother and me at Disney last year - the resemblance is uncanny - but it's on my work computer.

  • Interesting question. I haven't read the responses yet, but I'm gonna answer.

I look like neither of my parents, IMO. Some people say I look identical to my mom though. Personality wise, however, right down to speech patterns and physical mannerisms, I AM my mom. I noticed it one day when we were grocery shopping together. We were trying to decide what type of laundry detergent to buy cause we wanted to switch. We were both standing in the middle of the aisle, in the exact same pose: hand on one hip, right toe pointed out to the side. I brought it to her attention and she said it was an old habit from years (like 15) of ballet. I never took ballet, I just do it because she did. My sig pic is eerily similar to a pic taken of my mom in the '70s when she was my age, down to the bandanna on the head and drinking straight from a bottle. I've got to get ahold of the original and scan it. I love that picture.

We also are on exactly the same wavelength, and sometimes when I call her, the line's busy because she was trying to call me. We also make exactly the same meals for dinner sometimes, without ever telling the other what we're making. So I'd definitely say I get all of my personality from my mom.

  • I got my mom's hair unfortunately, i.e. thin (thickness-wise) and thinning, where my dad's in his 60's and has thick black hair just like his brothers lol.

Got my eyes from neither of them somehow; 20/20 vision when both of them were in glasses by teens.

My face looks a lot like my dad's.

Personality-wise, I think I got that from them splitting up when I was young and having to deal with all that mess, so I'm independent, very ambitious and self motivating, loyal but take a while to trust, have a bunch of close friends but not a lot of acquaintances.
