it means "without papers" its a deragatory term used commonly(here at least) for italians because there was a large influx of italian immigrants earlier in the century (1900's ish?)
It's an old school ethnic slur against Italians that stands for "without papers."
Back in the 1930s when my dad was growing up (he's old) he would get beaten up at school for being Italian and they would call him "w*o*p" and "diego".
It was commonly used for Italians in Boston but it really applied to all illegal immigrants who made their way over. If you got caught "with out papers" you were deported. It's the whole, you came here and stole our jobs shtick.
Wow, I just looked it up on wikipedia, and we were wrong. the "without papers" is called a backward acronym. But I can't link to the entry b/c of the knot's censoring sysem.
haha It's ok! my dad used to call me his mini guinea... or his little w o p on occasion. but for us we're a bunch of crazy italians who came in during that period so I think we have some pride in it.
How is that deragatory terms like the N word, or Guinea, or W O P, or Mick(mack) are ok for the same to call one another, but once someone else joins in it's not kosher? Like why was it ok for my dad to call me that and I didnt take offense because there was an affection behind it.
probably because I was 4 at the time, but still you know what i'm saying.
I didn't know what it was until my husband started calling me that when he found out I was Italian. Actually, he likes calling me a w.o.p. dago - even better. Thanks, honey!
I knew it was a derogatory term for Italians, but I had no idea it meant "without papers." I'm really sad to say this, but there's a European (I say European because they serve German and Italian food) restaurant that has a salad called "w o p salad." I can't believe they've gotten away with it for this long.

Idk, there are some things that I think shouldn't be said even within a particular group to one another.
In the past, it also could refer to one following the guapparia, meaning bravery,[1] i.e., the ancient honour code of Camorra, a criminal organisation based in Naples and the region of Campania, which bears similarities to the better-known SicilianMafia.
In Italy, the term "guappo" is still used, often sarcastically, to describe those young Italian men who really try hard to act brave, play cool, court every pretty girl, and those that are arrogant to the point of inciting a fight.
now we just call them guidos. **I'm Italian and take no offense with any of the terms. My family came over legally and we have bigger things to worry about.

I'll own my ignorance. I had never heard that term before. I know it might be surprising, but the Italian population up this way is pretty low.
