I'm all about food today.

I'm hosting a baby shower on Friday, so we're doing dainties and cookies and such.
What would you bring if you were me? Recipes earn you big time gold stars.
TYVM.

EDIT: I'm looking for suggestions for different cookies or dainties (squares/bars).
I suck at being specific.

I would take cake mix cookies, but only because I'm obsessed with them right now. Mix in whatever:

    http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/cake-mix-cookies-i/Detail.aspx

I'm making some tonight with mini chocolate chips and butterscotch chips.

I also like pigs in a blanket for baby showers.

I agree with taco dip, but my super easy cheap way is to mix a packet of taco seasoning into a large tub of sour cream. Done.

EDIT: You can also make the cookies in a 13x9 pan, and then they're cookie bars.

I am not sure where my recipe is for this because we just eyeball it.. we buy really good dark chocolate, break it into square pieces, take phyllo dough and wrap it around each piece then bake the wrapped chocolates for 15 minutes until brown.

egg wash on the dough of course. i will try to find a better actually understandable recipe but its sooooo good.

edit: not phyllo dough. i will find it darn it.

  • Or my mom's caramel brownies, which are awesome:
1 (14 oz.) pkg. light caramels
    2/3 c. evaporated milk (5.33 oz. can)
    1 German Chocolate cake mix
    3/4 c. softened margarine
    1 c. chopped nuts
    1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Combine caramels and 1/3 c. of the evaporated milk in small microwavable bowl.  Microwave til caramels are melted, stirring often, until mixture is smooth.  Set aside

Combine German chocolate cake mix with softened margarine, remaining 1/3 cup evaporated milk, and chopped nuts.  Stir by hand til dough holds together.  It will be very sticky.  Press 3/4 of this mixture into a greased & floured 13x9 pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 6 minutes.  Remove from oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips.  Spread caramel mixture over chocolate chips.  Put dollops of reserved dough on top.  Bake 15 to 18 minutes longer.  Cool slightly.  Refrigerate 30 minutes to set caramel.

  • The easiest thing in the world is Paula Deen's brownie recipe:
    a box of brownie mix
3 bars of chocolate that contain toffee bits (Hershey's Symphony Bars are recommended)

Make brownie mix according to package.
Pour 1/2 of mix into 9x11" pan,
    cover with chocolate-toffee bars,
cover the chocolate bars with the rest of the brownie mix.
    Bake according to package.

For some reason, the chocolate bars in the middle absolve all taint of brownie mix, and it's just heavenly.

    Homemade marshmallows are also awesome.
  • mini-quiche.  I use pre-made pie crust, and cut out circles (I use a drinking glass as the "cutter").  Fit them into muffin tins, fill, and bake.  Super easy, tasty, and about 2 bites each.

We had mini-hot browns at the wedding and they were awesome.  I haven't re-created them yet, but I'm pretty sure the chef took the little pastry crust shells (we can get them in the freezer case here), added some diced country ham and turkey, topped with a little mornay sauce, sprinkle on a smidge of shredded cheddar, and bake till gooey.  Add crumbled bacon and diced tomato to the top.

Also, chicken salad on any sort of small toast/pastry crust type delivery device.

  • Strawberry Shortcake Cookies a la Martha Stewart

    Makes about 3 dozen

    • 12 ounces strawberries, hulled and cut into 1/4-inch dice (2 cups)
    • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
    • 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
    • 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
    • 2/3 cup heavy cream
    • Sanding sugar, for sprinkling

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine strawberries, lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and remaining 7 tablespoons granulated sugar in a large bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter, or rub in with your fingers, until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in cream until dough starts to come together, then stir in strawberry mixture.
    2. Using a 1 1/2-inch ice cream scoop or a tablespoon, drop dough onto baking sheets lined with parchment, spacing evenly apart. Sprinkle with sanding sugar, and bake until golden brown, 24 to 25 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack, and let cool. Cookies are best served immediately, but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day.

  • Mini lemon tartlets or any tartlet with citrus curd.  I don't have the recipes on me right now, but they're all mainly citrus juice, citrus curd, sugar, eggs, and butter. It takes about 20 minutes to make from scratch, or you can usually find curd by the jellies at the grocery store.

    Directions:
make lemon (or other citrus) curd, chill in fridge until thick.  Or just buy it in a jar.
    Buy mini pastry cups.
    Fill pastry cups with curd.
If you're fancy, you can make a meringue to put on top and brown in the broiler, or you can put raspberries or sliced strawberries on top.  Don't bother with powdered sugar because the curd absorbs it anyway.

That's my go-to for whenever I have to bring something dainty for a crowd, and they're a huge crowd pleaser.
