Poll: Mixing Jewelry Metals- Do or Don't?

Okay, so there's the whole something old, something new, something borrowed, something new (sixpence in your shoe) deal, right?

As my something borrowed, my mom has a necklace that belonged to my gram that she always, always wore.  It's nothing fancy, just a gold chain with a medallion of Mary (the religious, Catholic-y one).

I know you can pin stuff like this inside your dress, but part of me just wants to wrap it around my wrist like a bracelet.  My rings are platinum, the detailing on my sash is silver and my earrings will almost certainly be silver.

Here's a poll: Mixing a gold bracelet (although a slim one) with silver jewelry: Do or Don't.

Re: Poll: Mixing Jewelry Metals- Do or Don't?

  • I wouldn't do it because I am a little neurotic about my jewelry. However, I think it's generally not a big deal. Especially when the pieces won't be right next to each other.

  • I think it will be okay!  I will be wrapping my late grandma's rosary around my bouquet just for the ceremony.  You could do this and then it is so much jewelry as an ornament.  Or around your wrist is fine.  If it is important and sentimental to you, nothing else matters.
  • My something old is the yellow gold promise ring my dad gave my mum when they were teenagers.  All the rest of my jewelry is silver.  I'm wearing it.  I think the "rules" are outdated and that silver and gold look fine together.  Just do it :)
  • I will have silver earrings, silver necklace and a gold charm bracelet that has my grandmother's name on front and grandfather's name on back. My grandparents passed away when I was in high school and when we were cleaning the house out I found the bracelet. I do not think anyone would say anything to you and who cares it has value to you and that is what matters.
  • I say go for it, or do like volleygurl said and wrap it around your bouquet.  That would be pretty as well and would make for some really great pictures.

  • I'm usually weird about this, but I think because it's really meaningful it's not that big of a deal. I think its very sweet.
  • eh. My E-ring is white gold, but I started wearing my grandparents yellow gold ring (grandma had both their rings designed as one ring a few years after grandfather passed away).

Both of them are gone now. I wear it every day now even though its not really my style just because it means a lot to me, and it means even more that all my family decided I was the one who should have it after grandma passed away. The uncle who gave it to me is a minister and said some special words to me at the time; he will be marrying us this year.

  • I have to disagree with the rest of the class. I think it's fine if your wedding/e-ring is white gold and the rest of your jewelry is yellow gold, but if your rings and earrings/necklace are white gold, it's really just tacky to mix and match with a yellow gold bracelet.  I would encourage you to wrap it around your bouquet because it's not on your person and that's different.

Also, the saying is "Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something BLUE with a sixpence in your shoe"  not "something old, something new, something borrowed, something new (sixpence in your shoe)" probably just a typographical error, but I figured I'd mention it just in case.

  • Ahhh yes.  I didn't even realized I'd typed it bizarrely.

I'm hesitant to wrap it around my boquet because it's just so so special and sentimental that I'm terrified I might lose it...

If I don't wrap it around my wrist, I might end up wiring it into the boquet/tying it in to make it more secure.

    Thank you ladies!
