Surprise Groom's Cake - ie, if you're nerdy and you know it...

I've been tossing around (you know, in my head) the idea of surprising FI with a groom's cake. I know he would really love it, and I had told him a while ago that there was no room in the budget for one, but as I'm re-assessing things, I think there might be. I'm handling the budget and planning entirely, so I have this one glimmer of hope to surprise him (usually that task is impossible).

Trouble is, FI has so many effing interests I'm overwhelmed with where to start. He is a huuuuge Star Wars fan (he has the mandalorian symbol on his shoulder, and four of the various... I don't know what to call them, symbols like the Sith on his forearm, and he also insisted we name our dog after a Star Wars character.). He also loves comic books (he has all of the colors of the Green Lantern symbols down his back), especially DC comics, if I'm not mistaken. If you're familiar with those enormous cardboard comic storage boxes, he has about 15 of those filled with comics. He's also obsessed with Disney (yes, he has a tattoo of that as well), Dr. Seuss, Game of Thrones... the list goes on and on.

Anyone have any ideas given the above of what could make a really cool groom's cake? My first thought was this (since he also loves Guinness), but I've already shown him that ages ago, so it wouldn't feel original in any capacity.  Unfortunately, my nerdiness leans in other directions so I'm not entirely familiar with all of his obsessions.

  • If he's got a bunch of Star Wars tattoos, that's probably a safe bet. There are tons of different ideas for Star Wars cakes, but your baker would best be able to choose a design he or she can accomplish.

<div>My baker does not exist yet. I would seek out a baker specifically for this effort because for the regular cake I just want a basic cake with literally no decorations - not even fondant, just icing. </div>

  • If he's into the Sith, I recommend a Death Star cake (simple in form, and can be simplified to decorate).

<div>This is actually a great suggestion. I recognize all those little symbols in the icing from his arm! Ha. </div>

You'll never be subject to a cash bar, gap, potluck wedding, or b-list if you marry a Muppet Overlord.

  • Yes. I like Sunday Sweets too.  I was going to post about Cake Wrecks randomly at somepoint. Cakes gone horribly wrong..There was a Knottie when I was on here the first time back in 2006 who's cake was an absolute disaster.

I love it when I read  like "Happy Birthday Jim in purple"  or 'Happy Birthday Katie no number" or...:

  • This is what I'm doing for FI. He is a HUGE nerd, especially Spiderman anything so I'm surprisng him with a groom's cake at the reception. The pictures of his reaction will be priceless! If you want a recommendation for a great and creative baker let me know. I'm not trying to throw my vendor's name out here, I can PM it to you if you're interested.

<div>My 17yo Star Wars nerdy DS just had a freak out over the Death Star wedding cake.</div><div>
</div><div>OP, one of my DD's was in a wedding a couple of years ago as a BM.  Groom was a true Star Wars nerd.  Bride got light sabers for the bridal party and as the B&G were introduced into the reception, the lights were out and the BP did a light saber arch for them as they came in to the Imperial March.</div>

  • This thread from Weddingbee has the coolest Spiderman idea (at least I think so) on the first page.  A teeny tiny spiderman peeking out from under the bottom tier.
