looking for friends!

hi! im new to the knot, and a new bride to be :) id like to make some friends that are:
musicians
students
live in atlantic canada (newfoundland!)
young (im 24 and ive been getting a lot of "thats so young" in response to finding out im engaged)
in a long(ish) engagement (a year +)
just looking to find people with similar interests/circumstances to chat with about wedding stuff since the internet is the only place i let my obsession show in all its glory lol.  get at me if you want a friend :)

Re: looking for friends!

  • You'll be surprised at how many people are in similar situations.

I'll start.  I am a student, I am 22 years old (turn 23 next month), and we will be engaged for just over a year when we get married.

It seems this board is full of people with longer engagements because many people want to finish school first.

Welcome to the boards!  Let your wedding obsession shine!
  • You're in luck. I meet all those categories except one. :)

I'm a grad student, working on M.S.A. degree. I am 20 years old. (I know that sounds young for a grad student... I finished high school 1 year early and my bachelor's a year early.) My engagement is long. He proposed on May 7, 2009, and we're getting married this coming May on the 22nd.  I've been sining in choir and in musical theater since I was four and have been playing piano since I was 10. My FH also plays guitar. :) I'm not from Canada, though... I'm a Texas girl.

I'm Courtney, by the way. It's nice to meet you! When are you getting married?
    Anniversary
  • hey ladies!
nice to hear from you! im glad to find people in the same boat lol :) i have a few local friends who are engaged, but the all seem to be getting married asap haha! im 24 and im doing my masters in genetics (geek) and me and my fh LOVE music! so it will definitely be important in our wedding lol. tentatively set for july 2011. my fh and i both sing and play as well. you must be so excited courtney! your wedding is so soon! whats it going to be like? :)
i cant believe you guys are even a year or 2 younger than me and getting your degrees!! thats so amazing! congrats to you both! i cant wait to convocate (october!!!). whats your program/finish date whitney?
  • I also meet most of those categories :)
I am graduating with my BA in Fine Arts in August, and planning on starting my MFA maybe Fall 2011-
I'm 22, and will be just shy of 23 when my FI and I tie the knot, and we've been engaged since...February of 2008. So it will be about a 2.5 year engagement, mostly because I wanted to finish my BA first. We are also high school sweethearts
I do love music, but cannot really plan any instruments. I am learning piano right now, but the going is pretty slow :)
    Nice to meet you!

  • I meet most of that criteria!  I'm 21 now and will be 22 when we get married.  Our engagement will be super long it feels like, it's already been just over a year and we still have over a year to go.  And I'm graduating with my BA in Psychology in December and will probably start working towards a Master's next January or September.
Nice to meet you and welcome to the board!

  • sammichele - we're almost twins! haha. I'm 21 and I'll be 22 when FI and I tie the knot 6/25/11 which looks to be your date, too! Congratulations!

I'm graduating in December with a BA in English and will start my MA next fall. I've got a lot of small press experience under my belt and will be chasing my dream to work in publishing, which is now I met the love of my life :)

So glad to meet you ladies!
  • I'm 24, from the midwest, and have been in a long distance relationship for our entire relationship - and now, we're wedding planning! We met while I was in England for my cousin's wedding and met his best friend (and best man) who is now MY best man :)

I think 24 isn't that young - some of us have a different mind set than the rest of our friends and peers who are our age!

How is wedding planning going? I am a newbie to the knot and I am sure our engagement is going to be a long one. We are at the VERY beginning of planning - although we're not officially engaged yet, we know that's where it's going and will be properly engaged come Fall. So, I figured, it's time to get the ball rolling since planning a wedding between two continents is going to be a challenge!!!

    Happy planning!!!
  • congrats to all of you ladies! courtney, your wedding sounds like it will be beautiful and personal :) haha im excited for you!
i wouldnt even call us in the planning stages yet lol. we are just trying to put money away for it, and gathering some ideas :) we are going to be on a budget for ours - how are you ladies managing, money wise?
awesome to meet you all :)

  • My parents were sweet enough to offer to pay for the wedding, but Dad doesn't want to hear about all the plans. So he said "I will spend x dollars on this wedding. You can spend it however you want. I put it in this checking account with your name on it." I tend to be a penny pincher for the most part, but we definitely splurged on the music. It hasn't been too bad sticking to the budget, other than that though. I'm an accounting major with a personal finance minor, so keeping track of the expenses and what I budgeted hasn't been horribly difficult. Thank goodness. Mostly, I'm just looking forward to planning being over and it being the day of so I can finally see the product of all the hard work and stop sweating the small stuff.

Have you and your FH figured out when, where, etc. you're gonna get married?
    Anniversary
  • thats so amazing of your parents! how sweet :) and really, if you are goning to splurge on one thing, the music seems like a good way to go! thats what everyone always remembers, and it sets the whole atmosphere for your reception! i was actually talking about accounting and finance courses with someone this morning and we decided its one of the most useful life skills lol :) so good for you!
we dont really have a date set, we are just aiming for july2011 (id like the 6th cause thats our relationship anniversary) and we are definitely going to get married in a church. we have been tossing around reception ideas and we know we want it to be an awesome party rather than a sit down dinner. so we will have cocktails and hors d'oeuvres and maybe a buffet (we already have the caterer! one of our best friends is a chef and is going to handle all the food stuff as our wedding gift! amazing!) but we want it to be fun and casual and have everyone out dancing and singing lol :)
  • I only fit some of those categories, but I'll introduce myself anyway.

I am 22, 23 next month, and 24 when we get married.  I am graduating in May with my teaching certification, I got my Biology degree in December.  My FI graduated in December as well.  After I graduate, we hope to be done with school for awhile.

    Nice to meet you :-)
  • Hey!  I fit some of the criteria...  I am 23 and I am getting my Master's in Reading and Language Arts Ed.  I've been engaged since Dec. 31, 2009, and we won't be getting married until June 11, 2011.  So, I understand the long engagement and even the "You're so young" comments.  I am really into music as well; I love to sing.  My fiance is a drummer, so we enjoy introducing each other to new music styles. :)  (because his style is certainly different than mine)  I don't live near you though... I am all they way down in Panama City, FL.  Welcome, and it's nice to meet you!

    Hey!

I'm 21, going to be 22 when married. Finishing my Bachelors degree in Geography and then on to a Masters degree!

I did have the "you are too young" experience, but most people have realized now that we are mature enough and aren't just jumping in to things too fast. It's great to have everyone on board though, makes planning a whole lot easier and more fun :)

We still have a year and a bit to go, but the excitement is setting in. We are trying to do most of the planning that can be done, this summer. That way our school work is less affected!Smile

We're the same way - our families threw a surprise engagement party for us (our friends were in on it, too!) and it was a great feeling knowing that those closest to us are supportive and excited about our lives together.

And I know what you mean about planning this summer. Our families live in different states and there will be a lot of back and forth while we're not in school so the big stuff can get done!
  • wow! courtney, i just got chills thinking about your cousin and his wife! i cant even imagine being in that kind of situation! i hope he returns home safe!

i agree with you about children though. i love kids, and my fh loves them even more. he is great with kids and works at a daycare. one of my best friends has a 2 yr old boy though, and visiting him is more than enough kiddie time for me right now lol :) someday
  • Yeah. He just barely made it home in time for the baby. He was planning to get home three weeks before the baby, but the baby decided to come early. He went straight from the airport to the hospital when he came home. If would've gotten home even an hour later, he would have missed it. O.O He's at home right now, but he's being sent back this September, pending some tests. He has post traumatic stress disorder, among other things, and they've got him seeing a pshichiatrist. Depending on the results, they may kick  him out of the Marines. He's kinda hoping for that. Apparently, the only way really to get out early is to apply and call yourself a crazy person. But they figure wanting to go home is a good sign that you're rational and not crazy. So he hasn't applied; he's just hoping to get kicked out and is keeping his mouth shut about wanting out. We'll see how it goes...

Wow, that's great that he loves kids so much. I think that's really great in a man. I was always scared I wouldn't find a man who wanted kids. (I want three!) Fortunately, Drew does want kids. He wants four though, which is one too many, I think. But I agreed that if we didn't have a girl by kid #3, we could adopt #4. But we'd wait until #1 was at least in college. lol. I've been a nanny for the last year four days a week in the afternoons. (I just quit in the last two months.) I really miss having kids to play with. :( My BFF who just got married in February is having a honey moon baby in November, but she's moving away before she has it. :(

    Anniversary
