Weird cake question...

So I love carrot cake and my fiancee only likes white cake without icing (weird, I know). I really don't want two separate cakes and having a separate bride's cake and groom's cake isn't really the norm where we're from anyway. Do you think I could find a bakery to make us a small cake with alternating layers of carrot cake and white cake without icing? Or is that silly? Neither of us really cares all that much about the cake, but figured we might as well have what we like since it's our wedding.

Question 2...would it be weird to serve the guests a different kind of cake? I don't want to assume that everyone would like what we do, so would it be odd if we also had sheet cakes of something more traditional for others?

If your having a tiered cake then each tier can be a different flavour. And serving guests sheet cake is really common and cheaper actually. If you arent to worried about the cake you can do a dummy cake (its made of styrofoam) and serve sheet cakes and have small cakes of your own, or just have a portion of your cake out of styrofoam and the rest your type of cake.

We're having a large wedding and a tiered cake, and i didn't want the tiered cake to get out of hand, so we're just doing 4 layers and then after that any additional servings will be made into a sheet cake and won't be out for display, but that's where a lot of the cake that people actually eat will come from. My cake lady told me that happens all the time, because people don't want gargantuan cakes on display

This is kind of what I'm thinking of doing...then again the chances of either of us eating much cake is slim to none since we aren't big on sweets, so maybe it's just a waste to make one especially for us when it may go uneaten for the most part.

haha well the tiered cake will be cut up and served too (other than the top layer), it's just that there's going to be even more cake than what the guests are seeing, in sheet form. so yeah, it's pretty common =)

Right, I just meant if we did the carrot cake/un-iced white cake, since other people might not want to eat that!

I don't think it's silly, but it might not be feasible to have a cake alternating carrot cake and un-iced white cake. I guess I've never seen a tiered cake with a section un-iced, so I'm just trying to think how that would work...?

Personally, I would just have a tier be carrot cake and a tier be white and have your FI scrape off the icing.  We had a 4-tiered cake and each tier was a different flavor.

Does your FI like cheesecake or ice cream cake?  You could pick a dessert he likes and have that in lieu of a groom's cake.

Actually, Hillary Duff had an un-iced wedding cake so it has been done before.   There was only icing between each tier.

we are doing two tiers of crowd pleasing flavors and a "FAKE" decorated foam tier or two to make the cake look amazing and huge.  Remember No one sees the cake when it gets chopped up.  A lot of people are doing flavors they like on 1 or two small tiers, faking the rest and then serving up a sheet cake no one ever sees in traditional flavors for a rock bottom price.   Also talk to your cake maker because maybe she could make you guys two mini "tasting cakes" for your table.  Its your wedding, have the flavors you like!

I think that your flavors are a little, personal? as in, I think quite a bit may go to perish, I don't know many people who favor un-iced carrot cake and alternating plain white (isn't that just carrot bread? haha)

It's strictly my opinion, but i'm going for tasty crowd pleasers for mine, but primarily because I know we aren't big cake eaters - okay he isn't, but i'd rather them eat and enjoy a cake than marvel at it being pretty and let it waste.

However - i'm all about sheet cakes in those flavors!

Groom can scrape off the icing. Carrot cake is not an uncommon flavor.

Regardling an icing-free cake, remember that the icing helps the cake to retain its moisture. So if you go sans icing, there's a good chance the cake will be very dry.

I agree with others. I would alternate carrot cake and white cake and the groom can just eat the cake part. We had a 3 tier cake with 2 different flavors. It was designed to feed 75 people and we had a chunk left over too.

We're having a tiered cake where only 1 tier is an actual cake, which will be the flavor that he wants, the other tiers are fake.  Then we are serving guests from sheet cake in 2 different flavors.  It will save us money in the end to do it that way.

Remember that your guests will be eating this cake- not just you and your groom.

I am on the side of having a "Sweetheart Cake" for the two of you in your fav flavor. Your bridal cake may then feature one or several flavors for your guests.

I don't like cake at all, so I'm checking with our baker to see if she can do the top tier in cheesecake for my FI and I to eat, and then I'll have my FI pick the cake flavor he thinks everyone will like best.  I'm sure it's not that difficult for them to alternate flavors on the tiers though, so I think you'd be okay with doing carrot cake/white cake (although I think your FI might just have to scrape off the frosting...it might look kind of weird to have part of the cake frosted and the other not)
