Alterations cost?

Hi there,

I just set up my first fitting (yay!) and the base price for alterations on my dress is $650. That includes hemming and taking in the bodice, and the bustle. I'm also having the waist moved up from a drop waist to my natural waist, but this is not included in the fee and I'm wondering if anyone can give me an idea of what that might cost?

I won't know until they actually see me in the dress what the cost would be - so I'm just wondering in the mean time if any of you have done something similar and how much it cost in addition to the base alterations.

Thanks!

Re: Alterations cost?

  • It's not that much compared to how much the dress itself cost, haha :)

    This is the dress:

The skirt has a ton of individually attached strips of three different fabrics - it's all hand made, which is probably why alterations cost so much - the skirt can't just be taken in at one point, each strip of fabric has to be adjusted individually.

Extra fabric will be added between where the sash is at the natural waist and where the full skirt starts as in the picture. We've looked at other seamstresses, but because of how involved this dress is, I want someone more familiar with the design and structure to work on it.

I'm just hoping that skirt alteration doesn't cost too much more than the base price...
  • Thanks! Yeah they warned me that alterations would be a lot - but I wish I'd asked earlier how much that skirt change would be. I guess I'll find out next week :)
  • Wow that is a lot for alterations. I totally get that your dress has a lot of work on it, but I'd still think about getting a second opinion.

  • I would still get a 2nd opinion or even a 3rd!

  • Well now I'm curious - how much did your alterations cost? I was thinking that an expensive, intricately made gown would just come with high alterations - am I off?

I will look into a local seamstress, but I'm worried because of the complicated structure of the dress that she won't know exactly what to do.
