Buffet vs Plated Dinner

My fiance and I originally planned on a buffet dinner. However, after seeing the logistics of the buffet at the reception hall (in its the hallway, not the actually room) coupled with the fact that I have some serious family issues that may require seating charts (and my parents, who are contributing to the wedding, are leaning towards a seated or heavy app meal), I am torn. My fiance still wants a buffet, but I just do not know anymore. Any suggestions or recommedations? Can you do a buffet with seating charts?

Re: Buffet vs Plated Dinner

  • You can do assigned seating with a buffet.

  • Yes I've been to weddings before that were buffet style but we still had assigned tables.
  • all the weddings I've every attended had assigned seats.  The food presentation  have been a combo of sit-down, buffet and stations

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My wedding will have assigned seating and we are only doing buffet because we can offer more food choices to our guests rather than doing a sit down dinner where they only give us one dinner option. No one will think anything of it - plus, your venue may still serve your guests salad/cake...just depends on the venue :))
  • Thank you all! That definitely has taken some stress off!
  • Yes, we're also doing assigned seating and buffet since it is more cost efficient.

You always need a seating arrangement no matter how the food is served if it is on plates where people need to sit down to eat. The only time you can get away with no seating arrangement of any kind is if you are serving desserts only or appetizers only. Otherwise you are inviting mass chaos, which is guaranteed to occur.

As for the meal itself, you have to sit down together and come to an agreement. Some people feel plated is more elegant, however other people don't care for it because portions are tiny and they go home hungry, and/or they don't like how something is fixed or the sides that go with it and are stuck with it. With a buffet, guests can take what they want and leave what they don't. If someone is still hungry, they can go through the line again. Some people claim that buffets are white trash but if that was the case, they wouldn't be found at very upscale events and hotels and whatnot.
  • We are doing buffet too, it actually costs the exact same. But my family is really picky and what I mean about picky is that they are all mostly hispanic and they tend to get offended if you feed them food that a "non hispanic" person made. They won't even eat it. So I am going to avoid that at all costs and just have a buffet with three different options. The head of catering told me that she had 392 people through her buffet lines in 22 minutes! Who can't be impressed with that!! Goodness!
  • We're doing the buffet so everyone has more choices. My fiance and I come from very different backgrounds (I'm hispanic and he's PA dutch!) so it seemed the best way to feed everyone.
