One last HM destination request...

So, I've posted a few times asking about Hawaii HMs. My heart is still set on Maui, but financially it's probably not in the cards. FI wants to explore more options. Here's what we want:

~Beaches
~Plenty of day activities like snorkeling, cruises, kyacking as well as hiking to sightsea what the area has to offer, like caves, volcanoes, etc
~Some inclusive packages would be awesome-we do like the idea of free drinks! But I don't want to be tied to one resort.
~Some privacy, a personal jacuzzi/pool would be ideal
~Budget is $4-5k total for a week long trip.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: One last HM destination request...

  • How much does airfare cost from where you live to Hawaii? $5k should be enough for a week, even if airfare costs $2k. $3k spread over 7 days would give you $428/day. You could save some money by renting a condo instead of staying in an expensive hotel. By choosing this option you would be able to cook some of your meals in the condo, which would also be a significant savings. If your heart is set on Hawaii, I think with your budget you could probably make it happen!

  • I second Costa Rica and I also suggest the Canadian East Coast.

    Ditto this...

Costa Rica is much more affordable than Hawaii and St. Lucia if you're looking for a more active HM mixed with some beach time. You can do the all inclusive, but still feel safe to leave the resort on your own to explore or eat somewhere else. Costa Rica is known for their rainforests, volcanos, ziplining, and wildlife and is definitely more than doable with your budget.
  • Hmmm...had not given Costa Rica a thought...thanks!

Travelingjen-agent quoted us at $3,500 for airfares and condo for the week. I know it is doable, but we're trying to determine if maybe we could get more for the same price elsewhere. Maui isn't off the list by any means...just trying to decide if that is the best option to get all we'd like to get out of a HM!

  • If you havent already, for condo rentals check out vrbo.com and homeaway.com. Price both the condo rentals and airfare out separately from the quote the travel agent gave you; it might end up being cheaper!!

Costa Rica is fantastic and very affordable, depending on when you're traveling there.  Two of the hotels we loved were El Silencio Lodge + Spa and Lapa Rios.  Both very honeymoon-worthy.

But if what you really want is Hawaii, why not make it happen?  A week in Maui is very doable for $5k.  You will have to give up the all (or even semi)-inclusive thing though; you can't find it on Maui.  If you really want a hot tub, a condo might be the way to go.

When are you traveling?  Start 'liking' some of the chain hotels on Facebook - the Hyatts on Maui and Kauai are always offering great deals that they post on FB.  Check out Luxury Link, Jetsetter, Snique Away, and the like.

Do you have miles that you can use for some/all of the airfare?

Priceline your car rental - we've always gone with a convertible (so cliche, but so much fun in Hawaii) and gotten 50% off the advertised rates online.

Does your $5k include food, activities, etc?  If so then yes, it will be a bit tougher. Still, if you do enough research, you can get the hm you're dreaming about within your budget.
