Treating yourself/Splurging

Does anyone else have a hard time spending money on themselves? I got VS swim cataloug in the mail yesterday and I was complaining to FI how expensive they can be. I want a cute one for the HM but have a hard time justifying spending over $50 on it. FI said sometimes you just have to treat yourself. Anyone else feel this way?

I know what you mean. I love so many of the VS swim suits but I cant bring myself to buying one for that much money. I was on their site and tried to buy one that was on sale the other day but there was no matching bottom. Dumb!!

  • Yes. I just ordered some new boots and a new purse. Both should be coming in the mail today. I almost never buy myself things. But I have been really stressed out and felt I deserved them.

  • I agree! I love buying stuff for other people, but I'm more stingy with my money with myself and then super picky when I do buy stuff.

I bought a bathing suit during the sale, but I'm not sure I like it which makes me annoyed. I hate how they put the same exact bathing suit on sale in some colors/patterns, but not in others.
  • Constantly. I can't buy myself anything because I am always saying "well I should really use the money toward X"

I supposed it's a good thing? But it makes going to the mall very sad :(

FYI.. VS bathing suits are totally worth it! The quality is so good! Its the only place I buy my bathing suits from. I have the same bathing suits from years ago and they still look great. I usually buy myself a new one at the end of the season because they have great sales!

If I don't have $$, I won't go. I have fallen in love with a couple cute consignment shops near where I love though.

I am ok with splurging but I usually have to justify it first. Only because I don't know when to stop splurging. So I've learned to justify things and probably two or three times a year I will get something "just because" without any justification! ETA: I have made a new rule for justification. If I buy 3 new shirts I have to remove 3 from my closet. If I can't find it in me to throw out shirts from my closet I can't (and don't need to) buy the new ones I am looking at buying.

  • I can never spend money on myself. I am a generous gift giver, but for some reason that doesn't translate to me. I feel guilty when I spend money.

FI, however, treats himself all the time. It makes me furious! Ha!

I go with FI a lot. He's pretty into clothes. And getting deals and perfect sizes. I can't tell you how many times we have been to Macy's in the last 6 months so he could look at suits and tuxedos.

  • I have a very hard time with this. But, I don't really care about myself that much. I am a much better giver than receiver.
But, I am getting a massage on Sunday. :)

  • I can't buy something expensive, but I will end up buying mulitple cheap things that end up adding up, then I regret it.
I try not to go to the mall if I don't need anything but FI often wants to go.  I just try to stay away.

  • I agree it is super hard, especially when you are on a tight budget. I don't know about all of you ladies (I know many are also students) but FI and I are trying to move out of our respective houses atm and we both are working part time/going to school. Paying for the wedding is always on our minds as well so we are trying to save as much as possible.

However, I think sometimes you just have to listen to Donna and Tom from Parks and Rec to 'treat yo self'. I always think about things for a few weeks before deciding to get something that is a 'want' rather than a need, but then if it's still in my mind I'll go for it :)

I'm getting a little bit better with my money. I'm still pretty frivalous, though, but that's with stuff like groceries, toiletries, restaurants, etc. I don't have a job, but I have a credit card that my parents pay for (for all of the previously mentioned items), and I have some money of my own tucked away (which I use for personal things: shoes, bags, clothes, makeup). That doesn't mean I don't like getting other people nice things too. I love giving gifts! I bought my mom, my dad, and my sister all iPhone 4s for Christmas. So just because I spend some on me doesn't mean I don't like spending on others. I've started to try to be better, though, so that we can save as much as possible to put towards a house we really want. Plus, I'm not used to paying for my gas, phone, bills, insurance....so it's gonna be a huge shock after June 23! I'm not prepared...

  • This is something I've been actively working on. I went for years never even buying clothes for myself, let alone treats. Now I"m forced to buy nicer clothes for work on a pretty frequent basis, and I've learned it's nice to actually look good. I bought myself a cute dress for my friend's wedding a few months ago. Next up: good boots for the winter and warm driving gloves.
  • I always talk myself out of splurging or make myself feel guilty about it, even when it's something I technically actually need, or at least could genuinely use.

Heck, FI got me a spa giftcard for Christmas that he had to BEG me to use, not because I didn't want to go but because I felt guilty about spending the money that was already spent!

  • I always splurge lol. I see nothing wrong with buying stuff for myself. I work hard and deserve what I get
  • I used to treat myself all the time...then I got engaged and started saving for a wedding, haha! Now when I buy myself something (which is rarely) it definitely is a treat. I can't wait to get married for a number of reasons, one of them being that I will finally be able to go shopping again, haha!

</div><div>Around mid-May VS usually has an awesome swim sale. Depending on when your HM is, you could wait until then to order one. Otherwise I was just in Target a couple days ago and they have a lot of SUPER cute suits for much less than VS. </div><div>
