Moving Tips?

So FI and I go the keys to our new apartment on Monday and have spent every night after work this week painting. We're done now (well--really close to done) and I'm trying to strategize our next steps. Technically we have two weeks until we have to be out of our current place but I just don't know if I want to drag it out. Should we do small things tonight in our cars and then big stuff tomorrow in a U-Haul? I just don't know. Oh, I should mention that the two apartments are only about a mile apart so the number of trips really doesn't matter.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?

Do you have any big appliances or no?

If you do it's worth hiring movers we did that went we moved from an apt to our house because of the beds, washer and dryer, aquarium stands, tv, etc....

Pack up the stuff you aren't using first and gut a room (if possible) to put packed boxes in.

Label the outsides so you know where they go

Anything you need right away pack last and unpack first (shower stuff, TP, cleaning supplies, etc)

Dispurse heavy items into various boxes - ie don't pack all books, or canned goods in the same box.

There also was a Livingsocial deal for 2 hours of moving service ironically today (clicky)

Also if you start early you can start getting stuff weeded out for donation/trash why move it if you don't need/want it?

We had 2 weeks as well, and we moved all the stuff we could in our cars and started unpacking it so it would be easier then we moved the big stuff in a U-haul on a saturday.

We are moving soon too! We already have our house and we have our rental until the end of this month. We started packing up nonessential kitchen items first, then things like picture frames, vases, etc. and have moved them over to the house already. Our plan is to keep doing that and move all of our small items ourselves. Then we're hiring movers to do the big items like furniture.

When I moved to St. Louis my company paid for the move and I decided then and there that I was never moving furniture again! It was so nice not to have to deal with it. I didn't even have to take the clothes out of my dressers.

I agree with a PP--be sure to label everything! Also, definitely try to part with things you aren't using. That is one of the best parts of moving--the opportunity to purge items you no longer want/need.

Do it all in 3 days. Day one, move your furniture and get it arranged. Day two, bring your closet and kitchen stuff and put it away as you go. Otherwise you might find youself living out of boxes for weeks!

Day 3, clean the old place. :)

oh man, we are moving this month also.  It's going to SUUUUCK.  We've lived here for two years AND acquired all things baby....there's so much CRAP it's overwhelming.  I remember the days when we didn't even have a kitchen table or a TV....sigh

I don't want to sound like a know-it-all, but since I have moved about 5x in the last 2 years, I do know a thing or two.

If you can, I would do it in your cars. It will definitely be cheaper that way. In town shouldn't be too bad, but they usually charge by the mile. If you know anyone with a pick-up or SUV, ask them to borrow it for the big stuff.

thanks so much ladies! i like the stepwise process that many of you are suggesting. don't know if we'll do big stuff first or little stuff first. we don't have much big stuff which is good and i'm a big purger so i've been doing that every few months anyway. i think the only things we couldn't manage in our own cars would be the guest bed, our bed and our big couch. and i agree with you MissySue that borrowing my dad's truck is probably going to be the way to go :)

in happy news, just found out that a girl in one of the units upstairs is selling her stackable washer dryer (for a very very reasonable price) so all we have to do is pay for it and get it onto this little dolly thingy i borrowed from work, put it in the elevator and go down 3 flights. awesome! so so happy about this.

thanks again! i'll check back again later so keep the thoughts coming.
