Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

What are your favorite ceremony readings?

I'm starting to choose readings for our ceremony, but am kind of clueless on where to start.  What are your favorites? From the Bible or otherwise.

Re: What are your favorite ceremony readings?

  • One of my favorites that we did is Shakespeare's Sonnet 116.

  • We had a Scripture reading and a secular reading (a poem that was actually from Sex and the City.) I like both types of readings for different reasons. Remember there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to the passages you select, so choose readings that have special meaning to you and your FI.

  • We used three in our ceremony. H picked the first one, and I picked the other two (his sister read the one he picked, my SIL's read the ones I picked). They were:

    Union, by Robert Fulgham

(an excerpt from)A GIft From the Sea, by Anne Morrow Lindberg

The Love Monkey, by Edward Monkton (sounds silly but it was really sweet and really fits if you and your FI have had past relationships and took awhile to find each other)

  • We used 2 readings - one from the Song of Soloman and one from Captain Corelli's mandolin, which is here:

Our officiant also had another reading that he read as part of his homily from the Velveteen Rabbit, which I LOVED and had many compliments on from our guests:

  •  1 Corinthians 13 is "The Love Chapter" I think. Gets put in many, many weddings. And I still like it and am using it even though I've heard it 100 times it I still enjoy it.

Google will tell you Bible wedding verses that are popular.
Your officiant may also suggest some.
Beware, popular choices also include a Genesis chapter telling how God made "woman" as a "helper" to man, and there's another passage (forget what book, sorry) which I think says "Wives, submit to (or  "obey")  your husbands. Husbands, love your wives".
These don't bother all brides, but I am picky enough that it would bother me. So just make sure you read everything through first to make sure you like it!
