Wedding Woes

BR question: Traveling

We're going to a wedding in 2 weeks and have to rent a car. We're going back and forth on bringing our car seat or getting one from the rental place. What has been your experience either way?

Also, if we take our car sear, can we gate check it and do we need one of those giant carseat bags?

we took our car seat, and gate checked it.  we did buy a car seat bag; we just didn't want it coming back to us dirty and then have to put the kid in a filthy seat.

take your carseat - that way you know it is clean and safe (you never know what the rental company would supply)

depending on the airline, they may let you check both the carseat and stroller at no charge (if you're planning on taking a stroller) Check the luggage policy of the airline - I flew Continental.

When I took Wolverine to Pittsburgh by myself in Feb, I checked the carseat +base in one of those big nylon bags with my luggage. I put Wolverine in the stroller at a full recline. I gate checked the stroller in another big nylon bag. I figured that the bags offered a little more protection than the glorified garbage  bag the airline would use, and even threw my sweatshirt and an extra baby blanket in with the carseat. Security is a nightmare so the more adults and less gear you have, the better off you'll be.

One recommendation is that you use your Moby wrap for the flight. I put Wolverine in a carrier for the flight, and she did fine. Considering the travel fvckery on the way back to Houston, the carrier was a lifesaver.

Would one of the cheap car seat bags work? Something like this?

or do you think one of the more expensive ones would be better?

I'm totally bringing both the Bjorn and the Moby.

considering how roughly baggage is handled, we wanted something a little stronger.

i carried it (empty) as a backpack through the airport.  the stroller bag and my bfing pillow was inside.  dh had the stroller, carseat and baby.  once we go to the gate, we took the baby out of the carseat, shoved the carseat and stroller into their respective bags, and then i carried baby and bfing pillow with me onto the plane.

i didn't use a moby or bjorn because i wanted to nurse him taking off and landing to relieve ear pressure.

Thanks! I don't think we're  taking the stroller (with the car seat adapter and everything it's a PITA to deal with). I'll wear her. I'm also planning on nursing during take off and landing. It's easy enough to get her out of the carriers to do that.

Ditto Hmo - get a bag.  We bought the $10 (or less) red stroller bag from Babies R Us.  We had a duffel bag big enough for the car seat, so we used that instead of purchasing a separate bag.  I know you can get the car seat bags at Target, just FYI.  The cheap red bag has held up through several flights, and says "GATE CHECK" on the side.

We had a similar process as Hmo - except I used my baby carrier and wore that btch all through the airport.  It was much easier to have two free hands for paperwork, helping H, etc.  And at that time, she was small enough, if I were wearing the right bra/shirt, I didn't even have to un-wear her to BF on the plane.

we bought this for the stroller: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2674960
and something very similar to hmo's bag for the carseat. ourse was little bit cheaper (around $25) at BRU.

I gave Wolverine a bottle during takeoff and landing. Trying to BF her on the plane was difficult  - i did it on the way home while pumping out the other side (but I also had an entire row of seats to myself, and didn't take her out of the carrier. She didn't have any issues with the pressure.

the most important accessory to have when travelling with an infant is another adult. i would never do it by myself again unless absolutly necessary.
