Bridesmaid tipping make-up Artist?

Hello,

I am soon to be in one of my friends weddings and we are getting our hair and makeup done by a professional. Both of these cost are to be done by the bridesmaids which is fine, i have no problem with that at all, I am just wondering what the etiquette is for tipping the makeup artist? I know with the hairstylist if you're going to the salon then tipping is appreciated but if the makeup artist is meeting us at the salon (shes a private freelance artist), are we required to tip her as well? Any information would be great! Thanks!

Marie

  • Yes, you tip.
  • If she's private and freelance, I'd say she falls into the "owner of the business" category and a tip would not be necessary.  However if she does a really nice job it'd be nice to slip her a few extra dollars.

You said 'private freelance" so that means she's the owner of her own business. As a rule, you never have to tip someone who owns their own business. You can if you'd like/if you feel like you got a great deal/if they did a steller job/etc.

EDIT: make sure the salon isn't taking a cut of her profits first

  • Yes, you should tip.  Whether she owns her own business or not, she's performing a service for you.  If the owner of the salon happens to also be the person who cuts my hair, I still tip them.  18-20% is (or should be) standard.   This is particularly true if the make-up person is bringing their own make-up and products and traveling to you.
