When to Start Booking Everything Else...Is It Still Too Soon??

Hey ladies.  So I have a year and about 2 months and a couple weeks left till the big day, 4/4/2014.  I have all of the major big ticket items booked:  the venue, photographer, and DJ.  I also have my dress, I found it by chance while I was trying various styles on to get an idea of what I liked and I knew I couldn't leave the store without ordering it.  We booked those about 6 months ago and decided to take a break since we had much time left.

Now that we are almost at the year mark, I'm just wondering when I should start looking to book everything else such as the florist and hair stylist.  I already have a makeup artist (she did my makeup for our engagement pictures) and our minister (FI's friend is a minister and he offered to marry us).  I don't think I'm forgetting anything else in terms of vendors but if I am, please feel free to mention as well LOL.

  • When I was about a year out, I booked my florist, officiant, MUA and set up my hotel block.

  • We are looking into hotel blocks within the next couple of months.  We are going to send the hotel info with out Save Our Dates for some out of town guests so that they have the option of booking earlier if they prefer.

  • I say maybe the florist since many only do one wedding a day. Do you have or want a videographer?
Everything else are smaller things that can definitely wait. My wedding is this September and even now when I call about some things they tell me I'm very early. LOL

  • My FI doesn't want a videographer.  We started looking at florists and are going to make a couple of appointments over the next month or two.

  • I booked just about everything a year and a half before my wedding and I'm glad I did even if it seemed a little nuts.  You'll learn that many vendors in NJ book up early, so if there's someone you think you may be interested in using, meet with them and book if you like them.  I had my choice of every vendor I wanted and never felt stressed.  And not one vendor turned me away for wanting to book early.  My rule was if there was only "one" of that person (like a stylist, florist, etc) then I wanted to get them booked ASAP.  The other bonus was that I locked in 2011 pricing on everything for a 2012 wedding.  By the time my wedding arrived, I noticed most of my vendors had gone up in price.

As far as other vendors go, is your DJ doing music for your ceremony or do you need someone else to do music?  Does your venue provide you with a cake or do you need to find a bakery?  How about transportation for yourself, your wedding party, and guests (if providing)?

  • I don't think it's EVER too soon!  We booked everything big before our 1 year mark (venue, Church, flowers, transportation, got my dress, picked out our bridesmaid dresses, band, photographer and videographer) and I'm SO HAPPY I did that.  I still need someone for hair and makeup and we still need our cake.  We plan on doing that within the next month or so (our wedding is December 7th of 2013).  Everyone I have talked to has said that we are very smart for getting everything done because now we get to just enjoy our engagement :)

I say if you find what/who you like, BOOK IT, otherwise it may be too late!

  • We had 10 months from the time we got erngaged to the time we got married. I suggest getting all your vendors booked no later than the 8 month mark. If there is someone that you REALLY want to work with (florist, MUA, etc), make sure to contact them even earlier. Also, just a tip to reduce your stress, get all the paper products printed as early as you can. I had my invites done in January, for a wedding in July. What a stress reliever! I wasn't scrambling last minute.

  • I would say the florist is most important, along with other things that can get booked for a specific day, limos, hotel blocks, hair, etc.  Another tip is to plan on visiting your florist around the time that you will be getting married, April, that way, all the samples they make will include flowers that are available at that time of year.

  • I don't think it's ever too early if your date is set.  I booked most of my vendors at about 15 months out, just because I knew what I was looking for and that was when it was convenient for me-- you can have your pick of the best that way!
