engagement gifts?

I know you're not technically supposed to use shower gifts til the wedding, but how about engagement gifts?  A member of FI's extended family got me a roasting pan that I'm dying to use but I'm not sure if engagement gifts are subject to the same rules.  The giver acknowledged that it is specifically an engagement gift, not a shower or wedding gift.  Help?

    Wedding gifts can be used after the wedding, so it makes logical sense that engagement gifts can be used after the engagement. You appear to meet that criteria.

    My grandmother gave us some of our families season tickets to the theatre (Shrek the Musical<--they get married lol) 5th row...of course we had to use them last week haha. I think if they give it to you for an engagement use it..just make sure you send that TY card out!

    Haha thanks... I figured I could use it.  And for the record, I was floored we got engagement gifts- I've never heard of it and didn't expect any, but apparently parts of his family do this regularly.  And the TY card went out the day we received it :)
