I attended at Catholic wedding yesterday.  They only had a nuptial mass and no readings.

Most of the Non Mass Catholic Weddings I have been to all have had one reading.

    OP,

All Catholic weddings have readings.  The only real difference between a wedding outside of mass and a wedding with a nuptial mass is the eucharist--in the former, there will be no consecration of the eucharist or reception of it.

There should be 3 readings.  Usually an OT reading, a NT reading, and a Gospel reading.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you so much! This really helps. I don't want to do a full mass because I feel like that takes away from the fact that there is a couple getting married. I don't like that they jump into doing the eucharist right away. I have asked 2 girls to do a reading so far. Thank you!

This is a very true! My family is Catholic and all of our family weddings have been a non-mass version with readings. The difference, as stated above, is that you're skipping communion. Readings are always present at all of the Catholic weddings I've been to. :)

Well, the eucharist is supposed to bring the couple together.  The eucharist unites us body and soul with Christ, just as the married couple will be united together, body and soul.  It makes real the reality that there are actually three people in your marriage... Husband, Wife, and God.

And they consecrate the eucharist after the marriage vows, so I don't see them doing it as right away.

Having communion at your wedding may not be the best option, especially if one of the spouses or large parts of the wedding guests are not Catholic.  But I just wanted to explain that the eucharist really isn't supposed to detract from the marriage itself, but cement the sacred bond.

I don't see the Eucharist as cementing a marriage and many of the guests including my future husband are not Catholic

It sounds like the best option for you and your FI is outside of a mass, however, I suggest coming to the Catholic board if you have any other questions about the liturgy. Also, It is very steeped into Catholic theology of marriage its connection to the Eucharist.. in scripture it talks about Marriage being an image of Christ's love for the church, in which he gave up His body for her completely without reservation. "Theology of the body for beginners" by Christopher West talks a lot about it.
