Tasting

How early did you guys do a tasting and pick out table options (table cloths, etc) and decide on times (ceremony/cocktail hour/dinner/dancing)?  And anyone that went thru it with your venue can you tell me what we should expect?  Thanks!Smile

Our catering is separate from the venue.  We did a tasting 10-11 months ahead of time; in retrospect, this was really early especially as we don't have a deposit due until this month, but we wanted to make sure that this was the right caterer for us or else we would have had to adjust the budget (i.e. switch more money into catering and away from something else).  Have not picked out tablecloths or napkins yet.  I am planning to meet with the caterer 3-4 months ahead of time to nail that part down.

Am in the process of scheduling cake tastings now; I'm almost at the 6 month mark.

We more or less nailed our timing down about 10 months ahead of time, although I'm open to slight variations regarding dinner time, cake time, dancing time, etc.  Our DJ actually helped us more with the timeline than the venue person.  As long as you decide before your invitations go out (or before you have to specify times with vendors), you should be fine.

EDIT: Just saw that you're a September bride too!  I got engaged 8 months ago, so we did a lot of this stuff on the early side.

We did tasting and linens about a month 1/2 before the wedding. Its one of those not so rush rush details. Of course check with the cake vendors you are considering to see how much time they need.

We did our tasting for both the food and cake in January for our May wedding.... but... we already knew the vendors we would be using- this was more to select the meal and cake options.
I think if we were having our wedding catered and needed to select a caterer, we would have had to do it much sooner, but since our venue would be providing the meal, we really could have waited until now if we wanted to.

Cake tasting we did in Nov/Dec (May wedding). We pretty much knew who we were going with but shes a little pricey so we tasted just to remind ourselves that shes worth it!

We never actually went for a food tasting at our venue. We have a ton of family & friends that have attended parties there and went by their reviews and have heard nothing but the absolute best. Unfortunately their hours are very opposite of our schedules, so it was our only option.

We're still working on some of the timing. Were getting married at 11:30a (outside the reception hall) so cocktail hr is 12-1 then reception 1-5. Thats about all we know. Our venue doesnt need to know what time dinner is until like a week before so Ive kida pushed off deciding. We need to meet with our DJ first and figure out what he has seen work best as far as what dances are best before dinner and what are best after and how long that would take so I can give my venue a dinner time. But I wont be figuring this out until next month-ish, so a month before.

I work better under pressure so everything ends up being a bit last min :)

I had trouble with this for a while.  I cannot remember how to do it unfortunately.  It might be in a sticky at the top of this board?
