help for my FI with weight loss

I feel frustrated for my FI. He gets down on himself from time to time because he has been doing kettlebells for about a year now and he doesn't see much of a difference. I tell him he looks like he has dropped some weight and his arms look stronger. He does flucuate a lot, though. His diet for the most part is pretty good, I make him a lunch Mon-Fri and it is always all healthy foods, almost everything in there is clean for that matter. He does like to drink, but doesn't do it that frequently and he has been trying to cut out a lot of the beer and stick to vodka soda. He drinks a ton of water, and coffee, too. He works out I would say about 3-5 times a week depending on the week. Even though I think he is looking a little slimmer, I too wonder why he isn't dropping the weight quicker. I am thinking genetics have a huge part. His father is very heavy and his Mother is a little overweight, too. But, they also lead very sednetary lives and back 30 years ago they weighed a lot less. What gives? I just hate to see him so down on himself!

Oh and also, the workouts are crazy intense.  He is drenched after each gym session.  Dinner is usually fish, steak, or turkey meat with a veggie and on occasion a whole grain brain rice. For breakfast he has been doing a big protein shake with blueberries and banana (he drinks that after the gym) Lunch and snacks are a salad with no dressing and chicken, carrots, wasabi peas mixed with nuts, an apple, sometimes a string cheese.

Re: help for my FI with weight loss

  • That doesn't even sound like enough food for YOU, much less a man.  He needs a lot of calories to support intense workout sessions, and men in general require more calories than women.  I'd hate him track his calories--I'm betting he's not eating enough.

If that's not the case, he should probably just see a doctor.

  • I completely agree with J&K.  Sounds like he needs more calories, and more protein at lunch.  I would suggest to start packing him an additional snack or two for mid-morning and mid-afternoon to keep his metabolism up, and see if that works.  If you're unsure still, then I would seek a nutritionist for him.

  • My H was going through the same thing.  But like pp said, once I tracked his food for a week it was easy to see where the problem was and now he's down about 12 lbs.  Give it a try.
  • Does your gym have a nutritionist/personal trainer?  If so, it may be worth the money to meet with them once or twice to figure out the best workout routine and eating plan for him.  I agree with the other posters that he needs to eat more food.  He is burning a lot of energy but not eating nearly enough to keep his body burning his fat stores.  In fact, the less you eat the harder your body will work to keep the fat stored because it is trying to protect itself from going into starvation.

Have him speak to a nutritionist (they will most likely have him track his food for a few days) and then they will provide him with some ideas of what he should really be doing.

  • I don't know much about kettleballs, so this might be a silly suggestion.  Should he try to get some add'l cardio throughout the week?  Maybe that will help start some weight loss since it sounds like he's building a lot of muscle.
