New Orleans honeymoon questions

Hi everyone! My fiance and I are planning  on having our honeymooning in New Orleans so I figured you all would be the best place to get some information. Any recommendations of where to definitely go/see/do/eat and also places to avoid? Also, we hear mixed things about safety in New Orleans, what are your opinions on that/are there places that are not safe to be in? Thank you so much!!

Well, in short, you get what you pay for. There won't be a really nice hotel in a bad neighborhood. I'm not sure what your budget is, but there is an amazing W hotel in the french quarter. It's not the biggest one, it's like a boutique hotel. 316 chartres st. I would suggest going on a dinner cruise on the Natchez steamboat, going out to eat at Drago's,Olivier's(a little pricey, but quaintly french),Bayona, or Bourbon House, getting beignets and cafe au lait at cafe du monde of course, going to the zoo and the aquarium maybe on a chill day, and  jazz brunch at court of two sisters.

In general, for safety, just don't stroll around in unpopulated areas at night. Stay away from claiborne and the housing developments if possible :) If you are in the french quarter, garden district or warehouse and arts district or on st. charles, you are okay :)
  • There are lots of great hotels in the Quarter, Garden District and CBD.....just depends on what your style is....most charge for parking...love the Quarter..lots to do....great music...alll kinds...we like Maison Burboun and Palm Court...also clubs on Frenchman St for jazz...lots of great restaurants from high end to low...locals here prob know this better than me...but like po boys at Johnny's, beignets at Cafe Du Monde, bruch at Court of two Sisters...burgers at Port of Call....fun to ride around Quarter early in the am and check out the houses...Jackson Square or take a horse drawn tour...try the Riverboats,,,shop at the market, check out antiques and stores on Chartres and Royal........love the Garden District....alll the old home, churches, ride trolley on St. Charles to the riverbend and back, check out Magazine St...lots of bars restaurants shops...can't miss brunch at Commamders..then checl out old cemetart across the street....or a drink at the Columns Hotel....drive thru daiqs...Camellis Grill for late night snack.....as far as safety....just like any urban city just be smart...I personally don't go past Bourbon Street north at night...or go down lonely streets at night with just my husband..always wanted to go to the river area and check out plantations but heard its very nice......some of the family did an airboat in the swamps and loved it.
  • The advice these girls gave is pretty good. I tell my friedns and family when they come to visit: after midnight dont be on the first 2 blocks of Bourbon, close to Canal Blvd. fights and trouble tend to start there late night. it's mostly a bunch of strip clubs there anyway. Frnechman street is a must if you like music. just wonderful. at that end of bourbon you can find Jean Lafitte's. Its the oldest structure used as a bar in the United States. just a cool place to get a drink.  definietly take a walk along the mississippi river, it's quite beautifl up there.

  • I wouldn't reccomend being on Bourbon Street too far after midnight either and never ever past 2am.
  • If you look at my wedding web site under "Guest Information" it will have some ideas especially in the French Quarter area:

I didn't mention the cruise on the Natchez steamboat for the wedding guests since it was the venue for the ceremony and reception but I recommend it.  A hearty meal is included in the ticket price!
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
