Name on plane ticket vs name on ID

So I'm a dummy.  In my excitement to book our honeymoon, I accidentally put FI down as Alex lastname instead of Alexander which is is full name.  We've flown togethre before (but not out of the country) and his ticket said Alex then too.  We had no issues.  But now I'm afraid of us getting to Cancun and them not letting him in or something dumb like that because of the names not matching.  From what I remember, the only time they match the name to the ticket is when you're checking in at the first airport (which is the same airport we flew out of for NY).  So I FEEL like he should be okay.  Is this something I shouldn't worry about because it's clearly the same person (last names are the same and the first names are clearly the same, just one is shortened), or should I call them and have them change it and possibly incur a huge charge to change the name on the ticket?
WDYT?

  • Ehhh I think I'm airing on the side of not worrying about it.  They check your passport more then anything so my guess would be that it's not a big deal but I have no idea.
  • I don't think something like that would be that big of a deal.  I think most TSA agents would let it go but might comment on it.  Really unless you get a jerk he should be fine.

  • I think last names are the most important thing. Most people will realize it's just a shortened version of his first name. It's not like his name is Jonathan, goes by Jack and has Jack on his ticket and Jonathan on his license. If you're concerned, maybe you could call the airline to see if it would be a problem without actually changing it.
  • I would at least call the airlines to see what charge (if any) there would be to fix his name... and the sooner you call the better. Its better to be safe than sorry!
  • I would call the airline and change it. I travel rather frequently and I have seen and even been through some TSA agents and airline employees that were real jerks. Better safe than sorry. On top of that you never know what major world event might happen between now and then that could make security more stringent.

<div>If it were me, I would do this.  Try to handle it now so you don't have to worry about the stress of "what if".</div>

This. I've seen TSA agents throw fits over the smallest of things.
  • I would definitely have it changed. While he may get through in the USA, he may not get into another country. Absolutely everything has to match.
I know a lady who couldn't get on her honeymoon cruise because she used her new last name that she hadn't changed yet.
So, if you are going right after you get married, change it before or leave your maiden name until you get back.
    Just food for thought.
