Barn/Outdoor Venue and Wedding Help and Advice Needed

Our budget is very small and we are planning on an October 5th wedding.  I was thinking an evening wedding and doing a dessert bar to avoid feeding everyone a meal (call me cheap). But I just looked up the sunset time and it is 6:30 so now I am back to a meal.
Also, I am looking for a cheap venue for the northern suburbs that I can have my ceremony at and the reception.... I am so overwhelmed already!

If you're set on having the reception start at 6:30, then yes- you should serve a meal. That's dinner time for most people and they'd probably come expecting a meal. If you were to start the reception later, like 7:30-8 then I think you could get away with something smaller.

I'd look at city parks/community centers, they tend to be cheaper plus you can bring in your own vendors so there aren't any food/beverage minimums.

I've heard good things about the Best Western/Kelly Inn in St. Cloud (not sure if that far north is what you're thinking). Otherwise I've heard good things about Rockwoods in Otsego & Majestic Oaks Golf Club in Ham Lake.

I agree that if you went later(or earlier like 2-3) you could just do dessert =) I'd look at parks as well for a less expensive venue.
