Discontinued Effective Immediately!??

I just received an email from our planner, the burlap we had reserved for our Oct wedding (chair sashes, runners, etc) has been discontinued effective immediately!  So of course I started calling around, one rental company told me they're really expensive and they have to be trashed after two uses.  This may be why my company discontinued them.

So, now we may be making them ourselves!  I guess buying burlap in bulk may end up being cheaper than the rental would have been, but just an unexpected project nearly a month before the wedding.

Any suggestions?  Did anyone else use burlap?

Oh that sucks! I dont really have suggestions because I've never used it, but wanted to wish you luck with it.

Bright side, if you DIY them, you can sell them afterwards and get some of your money back ;)

I was just in Hobby Lobby yesterday (Matthews, NC outside Charlotte) and I know that they had a pretty large quantity and in multiple colors.  If you are OK with a sewing machine you can probably sew the material, but if you aren't you may be able to cut it and not hem the sides because it's already a material that's a little rustic.

That's terrible that vendor just let you know now!!  Please share who it is so we can make sure NOT to use them!  Best of luck to you!

The vendor themselves may have just recently found out. It wouldn't not use a vendor based on something that may have been out of their hands.

Why are you doing the leg work for this?  Isn't that why you have a planner?  We didn't have a planner, so I don't know the extent of their services but this seems like something they should handle.

How many runners do you need? I have a BUNCH left over from my May wedding & would be more than willing to sell them to you at a decent price. I have napkin rings as well.

She just found out today in following up with the rental service, whose name I don't know.  But she has called all rental companies in the area and no others carry the sashes, which is what I wanted the most for our chairs.  She has three weddings this fall that were all using it, so definitely not her fault they've discontinued and didn't notify everyone.  You can't get a contract or finalize rental numbers with a rental company usually until you have final numbers, which we're still getting in...

I have no idea how to use a sewing machine! (doesn't make me the best DIY bride I know!)

Right now I'm looking at just cutting them or ordering pre cut burlap tree wrap...

    hng0411 - I'll PM you, thanks!!!

What about Etsy, the source of all things wonderful!! I'd go into the weddings section and search for burlap. There are a lot of reasonably priced fabricators on there. I'll hunt around, too, and seeif I can find anything. Good luck!!

    Here you go:

This was the best one I found in searching for about 5 minutes and had runners and chair sashes. I just searched burlap in the weddings section.  There were a lot of sites that came up, if you want to look further.

If you end up making them yourself you can try an iron on hem tape for the edges, if you want a clean edge. It'll cut down the time you'll need to put into the project especially if you aren't handy with a sewing machine.
